I would say both [MWC and WAC champs] would be deserving [of a BCS bid], but I also don’t think that is likely, and I think the only way that our conference will end up having a BCS bid is if someone is able to remain undefeated. So TCU right now has the best chance of that bid. Again, I don’t think our league has the respect yet, [to surpass] the one-loss teams. However, our conference is stronger than the WAC, and I don’t think there is any argument about that. And the teams that the top three teams in our league have lost to, or might lose to, should all be very good football teams. So it might be the year, and I could be surprised, but I am still of the opinion that you probably are going to have to go undefeated to get in [to the BCS]." - Bronco Mendenhall

If Boise State loses a game Mendenhall should be pleasantly surprised.
(Unless TCU goes undefeated)
Arguments can be made about the WAC, especially if the BCS criteria are used over the past 4 years (though the MWC dominates the past 2).
The better argument is that Boise State should be in the MWC.

BSU isn't in the MWC...
…because they SUCK at everything else besides football. Now I’m of the opinion that shouldn’t matter, as football gross the most money, especially at the BCS level, but that is the reason today. If they got a reasonably decent hoops team, and some good girls sports, maybe they could move up in the world of conferences.

If Boise was in the MWC
My gosh, can you imagine how good of a conference that would be??? It would seriously rival the PAC 10 and Big 12, and surpass the Big 10 as far as the top four teams. And actaully, I think the plan is to add Boise in 2011 (?)…
That would be sweet!

Maximum BCS AQ status
If the BCS still uses the conference membership of the final year of the four year window over all years an expansion announcemnt this summer would allow Boise State to fulfill thier WAC exit obligations in time for the 2011 season.
The three BCS criteria are:
1) BCS ranking of the highest ranked team
2) Average ranking in the final regular season of all conference members
3) Number of top 25 teams.
Does BoiseState make the top 25 in the MWC last year? Maybe, but that wouldlikely require a win over BYU, knocking BYU out of the top 25. With then in the WAC we will have 4 top 25 teams for 2008 when the AQ critera are next examined, where we would have likely had three with them in the MWC. A similar situation looks likely this year.
Only three other teams add value to the MWC using these criteria from 2006-2009 (Using the first BCS standings as if they were the final). They are (in order of value added) Hawaii, Houston and Tulsa. Tulsa’s value is locked in from the 2008 season and Houstons is based on this years results. Hawaii’s numbers will drop off before the next BCS evaluation.
If the MWC expands to include Bosie State, Tulsa and Houston this summer they will be maximizing thier BCS criteria for an automatic qualification in 2012 and 2013.

You add those teams....
and then you’re talking about an uber-powerful conference, one that would be rivaling the SEC for the nation’s best conference, probably beating out the PAC-10 and Big 12. I say this because if you add those teams, and the MWC becomes a BCS conference, they will be able to recruit the players that those conferences have, and then have the caliber to go out and beat those guys on a week to week basis…

Wouldn't
those schools (Boise St., Tulsa, Houston) have to be evaluated in terms of the entire athletic programs, not simply football. I’m sure those other considerations are being covered over at BCS Evolution. I don’t have any records or statistics to back this up, but I’d probably rather have Fresno State than Tulsa. That would give the MWC two schools in California (assuming SDSU stays), two in Utah, two in Colorado and two in Texas (TCU and Houston). I think Nevada-Reno might make a strong case as well if you look at their recent history in basketball…

Yes, and TV market and academics.
Boise State should be in. Period.
Does anyone question Houston’s TV Market?
Tulsa was actually defended well in the Deseret News last year about this time.
With these teams a natural north south or east west division structure can be made, though the north west would be the power to start with for sure, with the south east being second.
When expansion talk heats up during the off season I will consider those issues more at BCS Evolution. During the season its all about football, and the BCS AQ criteria.
I did leave off Hawaii already … largely due to travel costs.
