Cougars Vanquish Utes, 26-23 in OT

20091128__uyfoot_1129_1_gallery_medium

After yet another (illegal motion) penalty (one of 19 flags overall), Max Hall found Andrew George open in the middle of the field and the senior tight end easily ran in for the game winning score.  A hat-tip to Jordan Wynn and the Utes in their tremendous 4th quarter comeback bid that fell just short.  Dennis Pitta became the Cougars' all-time leader in receptions, Harvey Unga further established his legacy, and Max Hall was able to win (or in this case perhaps "not lose") his 31st game at the helm.  But it was truly the BYU defense that won this game.  Congrats fellows and good luck in Las Vegas(?).

Eh...

…so comeback wouldn’t or better said shouldn’t have happened with the PROPER call. FUMBLE! Dead ball my rear!

by Smills91 on Nov 28, 2009 8:14 PM PST reply actions

alot of close calls

that could have gone either way. as well as alot of flags. refs definitely had a hand in the game. however, the worst non call of the game came from bronco not calling a timeout at the end of the 4th quarter. if they would have lost in OT, he would have faced a lot of tough questions.

as far as max goes

he had the opportunity to go down as a phenomenal cougar qb. he has his supporters and his stats are great, but his poor play in big games will be his legacy. sorry max

agree...mostly

It’s interesting that “big” games are brought up as his nemesis because he’s one quite a few of them, beating TCU (twice), Utah (twice), Oklahoma, Pac-10 teams, etc… Do I think he’ll be missed, yes. For how long? That really depends on how well Nelson and Heaps play next year.
Hall has to go down in the top 5-7 best QBs of all time at BYU—and for me to say that is something…

agree...mostly

Their team? no. They have a very good team.
Their fans. ABSOLUTELY. As evidenced by the comment below “Congrats Cougies…”

Congrats Cougies

You beat us, we couldn’t make the plays at the end and you guys did.

With that said, Max Hall running his mouth after the game? Did you guys see his comments? Where was this stuff after last year’s game? He held that in for an entire year? Have the kahonies to say something before, not after when you won’t ever face the team again. That guy is a coward!

You think if Utes had won at the end that he still would have run his mouth? He re-confirmed the bigotted, stereotyping point of view shared by many over there…

Is he aware that the BYU president is a U grad? That President Monson is a U grad? That the majority of U players are LDS and many are RMs? My wife and I were at the game and some people threw nuts at us… do we think all Y fans are classless and evil and do we hate them all? Grow up Maxie pad…

Hall needs to grow a pair and work on his resume because 12-32 isn’t going to get him too far in the pros. Maybe he can join Harline and be a back up singer or sell cell phone at kiosks.

by Binjanjino on Nov 28, 2009 9:27 PM PST reply actions

Um...ok

So, where is Brian Johnson these days?
I’m not saying Hall is an NFL player, I don’t think anybody could argue that, but don’t put down what he’s done in college.
Also, he didn’t say anything about Utah graduates, nor did he mention anything about their past. He simply said he hates the university, their fans (I agree 100%), and their players, and calls them classless. HE MADE NO MENTION OF LDS CHURCH LEADERS.
Why do you have to bring religion into it? Oh yeah, because we beat you…

To all Utes reading this

You’re comments about this being a “rebuilding” year for Utah is pathetic. You returned 7 starters on D and 5 on O… really 6 because Reed didn’t “technically” start last year. That’s 13 of 22, hardly rebuilding, your main structure is still there. Plus you brought in the supposed #1 JC QB recruit who ran an identical O at his JC, it’s not our fault he was terrible. Bringing back less than half would be rebuilding (i.e. BYU 2010, losing 5 on O and 8 on D from ‘09… 8 returning starters total and that’s IF Unga returns). Besides, isn’t the old saying “defense wins championships”? With 7 returning starters from last year (who I heard a Ute fan try to compare to the ’85 Bears… absolutely laughable) you have no excuse for allowing a team to rack up 55 points on you.

You’ve been waiving that rebuilding flag all year and before the season even started… and you think BYU is the excuses wimp? Even in our rebuilding year Bronco will still put up a 5th consecutive 10 win season.

So where does this leave us? Let’s discuss…
1) No more Sugar Bowl crap… they have to ram that bowl o sugar down there throat. It does no good anymore. Really when you think about it, you don’t hear Texas clamoring about their Tostito’s, or USC about their Rose, or VaTech about their Orange… get over yourselves! It was a bowl win. Not a NC.
2) As much as the Utes slam Max he still finished 2-1 against them
3) If BYU is so crappy because they lost to FSU what does that make Utah??? Yikes!
4) Bronco is 3-2 against Whitt… which means Whitt is 2-3 against Bronco (both were hired in ‘05). I’m happier with Bronco. Plus, Bronco has a more impressive record than Whitt (48-15 to Whitt’s 46-17)… and we haven’t had 2 BCS bowls to boost our recruiting. Yeah, I think Bronco does more as a coach with the talent given to him.
5) BYU has bragging rites again, which means…. Harline’s still open, Collie’s got McCain beat, and George just busted thru 2 Utes for the TD.

To all Cougar Fans Reading this

You were supposed to win! You were supposed to have a great season! You were supposed to be top 10. I think our Freshman QB put up a hell of a fight, going against this supposed stud Max Hall. He’s playing his first game at BYU, his third full game in college, and it goes into overtime. Max hall should have dominated the Utes this year, and they didn’t even come close. All of his expectations have been shattered. National Championship? HA! Heisman, WTF? BCS bowl to help our conference? Not even close. Yes, the Utes did go to two BCS bowls, and they both helped YOUR recruiting too. You should be happy we went to two BCS bowls. And we’ve had to listen to your Mythical National Championship crap since 84, so the “Sugar Bowl crap” isn’t going to stop, it’s more of a Championship than BYU’s. Face it, the Utes have done far greater things in the past decade than the Y, and it’s only looking better for the next decade!

by Ute-09 on Nov 29, 2009 3:41 PM PST reply actions

Are you throwing a tantrum?

Go cry somewhere else. As for our NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, it is real. No record book or almanac is going to show Utah winning the national championship in 2008. So, you’re dead wrong when you say your Sugar Bowl win is more of a championship.

Umm, really?

Who had us pegged to finish top 10? If that were true wouldn’t you think BYU would have been a preseason top 10?
10-2 (hopefully 11-2) is a great season, shoot we can even say that USC would love to have our record.
BYU did dominate Utah, were it not for Max playing his worst statistical game of his career this game would have finished with BYU winning by 3 scores. Not to mention that you benefited from a poor call by the ref… a lost helmet stops the play???
Max for Heisman? Who said that?
Ok Utah, here’s the scenario. You guys go to the BCS and we’ll get the recruits. Deal? You’re a moron ute-09.
Mythical NC? Were you at the game on Saturday? The AP was there to congratulate BYU with their own NC trophy. Utes are the only ones who don’t recognize it. Fortunately for mankind, America doesn’t give a crap about your opinion.
Let’s see… Since your BCS in ‘04 you’ve gone 2-3 against BYU, and 1-3 the last 4 years. Remind me again how you’re future suddenly looks so much better? Especially with us pulling in a top 25 recruiting class for next year.

by vaughnzipper on Nov 29, 2009 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, Umm, really!

They made it to the top 10 idiot, they just sucked to bad to stay there!

“Would have finished with BYU winning by 3 scores”??? WTF? Look at the score, look at overtime, give me a break on bad calls you baby. If we “would have” had an experienced QB we “would have” won by 12 scores (nice argument).

I don’t care how you take it, but yes if anyone in our conference goes to a BCS bowl it helps our schools, with money, recruiting etc, BYU may not have gotten as much money as Utah, but it helped. READ: http://www.fwbusinesspress.com/display.php?id=5407 Get in the game BYU, when you’re supposed to have a good season, don’t blow it!

Take your NC, some people do recognize it, they just happen to live in Provo.

by Ute-09 on Nov 30, 2009 4:48 PM PST up reply actions

Somebody is pretty upset about losing

We were supposed to be top 10 or we made it to the top 10? Those are 2 different things. If we were supposed to be top 10 then the preseason voters would have pegged us top 10. Supposed to is expecting that a team should be as good as expected. BYU made it to the top 10 despite expectations…. “idiot”.

Let’s see, Chambers to finish the half was wide open but Max couldn’t connect (7)… Pitta was wide open in the middle and Max over threw (14)… and Key fumbled the ball but his helmet came off (boo hoo) (-7 for Utah)… not to mention that we were at the 2 when Tonga was thrown for a personal foul (I won’t count it but it was there for us). Utah had nothing that kept them from scoring… besides themselves. Add 14 (or 18) to BYU giving us 40 (44) and subtract 7 from Utah to 13. I’m pretty sure that’s at least 3 scores… “idiot”.

I’m not disputing what the BCS does for other schools money wise, in fact that was never even mentioned before, but your logic that it helps our recruiting makes no sense. So Florida gets a BCS bowl every year and you’re telling me that them going has a positive effect on 1-9 Vanderbilt’s recruiting? Hmmm….. interesting.

Again as for the NC “Were you at the game on Saturday? The AP was there to congratulate BYU with their own NC trophy. Utes are the only ones who don’t recognize it. Fortunately for mankind, America doesn’t give a crap about your opinion.”. Yes the same AP poll that privelaged your Utes to a #2 ranking last year. So are you sure you want to say that the AP is mythical? I didn’t think so.

by vaughnzipper on Nov 30, 2009 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

Wow

Supposed to be a top 10 team, Yes. I never said pre-season? Where did I say that? Your first game got you into the top 10, STAY THERE!

Whatever, I don’t need a play by play, the game went into OT, it was close on your field with your fans. You’re saying that “Utah had nothing that kept them from scoring besides themselves”. But you also talk about plays where BYU is “overthrowing”, “can’t connect”, who else is beating themselves? Wynn overthrew about 6 wide open passes down field, should i add back the 42?

Yes, the BCS bowls provide that much more money, even Vanderbilt gets help from it, (probably more than the mountain west has ever seen). And yes it helps your recruiting, just like TCU’s bowl will help both of our schools recruiting. That’s the point, BYU needs to MAN UP, and should have been there.

Okay, I’ll stop talking about your NC, because you seem very hurt when I talk about it. Just remember that there are some people that believe in the loch ness monster, and they have pictures to prove it!

by Ute-09 on Dec 2, 2009 10:04 PM PST up reply actions

BTW

Has Max Hall done anything for BYU, the Mountain West, or even himself. Look up his profile online, his accomplishments are beating #3 Oklahoma, and beating two (rebuilding) Utah teams. He is a worthless college QB!!!! Having said that, he did have a good high school career, way to go Hall!

by Ute-09 on Nov 29, 2009 4:05 PM PST reply actions

Again

You can’t say he hasn’t done anything for BYU or during his college career. He’s BYU’s all-time winning QB, having won many more games than any of Utah’s QBs.
Go cry somewhere else, we don’t want your lousy comments here…

don't forget

He should win more games since he’s older than Brett Favre, and supposedly more expeienced. but both he, USC, and BYU were more overated this year (By ESPN, CBS and several hyper BYU fans) than they have been in the past 10. And it all comes down to a season that has basically sucked! Yes, you beat the Utes with a Freshman QB, nobody was shocked!!!!

by Ute-09 on Nov 30, 2009 4:04 PM PST up reply actions

Another rebuilding whiner!

What was the difference between your ‘08 and ’07 team? In ’08 you played your games at home… that’s about all I can see.
Besides resetting the record books? You’re right, Max Hall isn’t the best QB, BUT the only record that matters in the end is that he’s 2-1 against Utah.
