How did you become a BYU fan?

I'm always interested to hear about why people became fans of their favorite teams. In the case of the Cougars, there are three likely reasons: you're a student, you're from Utah, or you're a Latter-day Saint. The school's connection to the LDS Church is well known, as is the way BYU travels well for away games, since many Utah and LDS transplants show up in their Cougar blue.

Of course, those reasons also make it more difficult to be a BYU fan, especially these days. Inside the state, the BYU-Utah rivalry (I refuse to call it by that stupid nickname) has reached ridiculous proportions... and, let's face it, things didn't go our way this past year. Outside of Utah, BYU's connections to both the state and the LDS Church make the school and its athletic teams an easy (and unfunny) punchline for the ignorant and the belligerent. Sometimes it takes a special kind of fortitude to stay True Blue. But chances are, if you're here and you're reading this, I don't have to tell you that.

But maybe you're from out of state and adopted the team. Maybe your family used to live in Utah and you follow the Cougs from afar. I'm sure there are lots of different stories. So mark yourself in the poll, and tell your story in the comments.

Thanks shums

Nice first fanpost here at VTF…

Like I mentioned in my intro post, I got into BYU sports through my Dad and Uncles while growing up outside of Utah. California to be exact…

Do you have to be LDS to attend BYU?

I always wondered.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

definitely not.

Religion classes are mandatory (not necessarily LDS religion classes), as is adherence to a code of conduct that falls in line with LDS standards, but church membership is surely not. (See also: McMahon, Jim.)

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

Choice

How about a BYU student choice. Many become fans when going to BYU and then attending games. That usually hooks em!

good point! I'll add the option

I've been a fan my entire life.

My parents met at BYU, so my parents are both fans. I also graduated from BYU and have three siblings who also went there.

I’m from Colorado, so growing up we went to the occasional game at CSU or AF. I also vaguely remember going to a basketball conference tournament game in Ft. Collins.

I live in the SF Bay area now, and when BYU played at Cal in 2001 my dad came out and we went to the game. BYU of course had a huge cheering section, and we crushed them. It was good times.

Well, hello Holly

Good to see you in the new blog.

As for my BYU fandom, I didn’t become a real big fan until I started going to school there. Since then, I’ve watched BYU sports almost on the same level as major league sports, more or less. My parents did go there, but I didn’t really care all that much before attending.

good on ya

the more D-backs fans in the state, the better. enjoy.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

As long as you're from the NL West, it's good on me

I’m mainly a fan of the Rockies and Giants, but I was on the D-backs side back in the World Series when they won that.

D-backs?

D-backs are horrible. The only good thing about them is the Giants show up about seven times a year and I get to see them play. Field is nice though with that pool that have in the outfield bleachers.

I hate Robert Horry

I pretty much didn't have a choice

Once I got converted to the Church at 17 I pretty much became a BYU fan at that moment. I used to be a huge Kansas fan, and I still am, but now BYU is number one. That and I ended up going there. Go Cougars!

I hate Robert Horry

I root for BYU because I hate the Baltimore Orioles.

I really wish they beat Oklahoma on Saturday! Sooners are like Orioles. Because they suck.
