Pomeroy ranks BYU #4

If you're on the same page as I am than you would agree that the "poll"ing system to decide rankings is really quirky and a bit head scratching. Enter Ken Pomeroy. In the eyes of many his system for rankings is as close to unbiased as any ranking system can possibly be. According to his algorithmic quotients based on the rotation of the earths ambiotic components system today he has BYU ranked #4 in all the land for college hoops.

Who's in front of them you might ask? Just a couple of little programs like Kansas, Duke, and Syracuse. Then there's a bunch of little guys behind them like Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia, and on and on. Umm, I'm not sure what else to say? One side of me wants to jump for joy, another side of me thinks that's a little too high, another side of me is pissed because BYU isn't getting the respect it deserves (fyi, I'm happy with a #10 ranking, #4 would be sweet, I'm just not sure we're #4 worthy), and another side of me wonders "what if?". Could this be the year BYU doesn't get TKO'd in Round 1? Could this be the 29th Anniversary of the Ainge runner, played by Jimmer Fredette???

Yeah, #4 is a little high. I’m sure the team wouldn’t feel comfortable with a #4 ranking. And placed ahead of Kentucky? WOW!

IF

BYU can get by both New Mexico in the Pit (tonight, go Cougars) and UNLV (Feb 6—also the pit—of America) on the road, they probably deserved a top 5 ranking. But, that’s a big if and would be a monumental accomplishment.

They've been that high for awhile now

I’ve been tracking Pomeroy for years, and it’s important to understand what his rankings mean. Read his blog post, and the objective of his ranking system.

I swear they were like #3 a few games back for a time, but I could be wrong.

  1. is not a little high – it’s based on a complex equation. No team is ranked higher or lower than it should be – the ratings system just uses historical stats to predict today’s event. Based on how efficient their offense and defense is, that’s why they are ranked 4th. And it takes into account strength of schedule.

It’s quite a system, and I visit the page every day to monitor how teams are doing. It’s the best site to see how good a team is, and what their key wins and losses are.

Biggest game of the year tonight. I’ve conclusively decided that at UNM will be tougher than at UNLV (I’m sure I’ll eat my words later) – I mean Air Force… AIR FORCE was within 5 points with 5 minutes to go AT UNLV last night. That’s just sad.

I’m so nervous for tonight. I’m on pins and needles. I don’t think we’ll win. I’ve said it. Only to manage my expectations though.

My swag was phenomenal.

Weird. SBNation indented my #1 as if it’s a bullet point or something… That should read #1 is not a little high. :) Please don’t do it again

My swag was phenomenal.

stupid auto formats...

by the way, if you’ve got time tonight we’d love to see you on the game thread again. The SDSU game was a lot of fun—about 7 guys participating.
