Jaime Hill Fired
According to Dick Harmon, defensive coordinator Jamie Hill has been fired, after scary first-half defensive performances during a 1-4 start.
In Hill's defense, it's hard to hold an opponent to the 10-points-or-less necessary for BYU's offense to outscore them... just sayin'.

On the radio
Last night on the radio someone suggested Bronco should get involved with Jaime in reconfiguring the defense. I believe it was Hans Olsen who said after Bronco gave control to Jaime, it was total control, and he thought Jaime, knowing him, wouldn’t allow changes or giving up control in any way. I wonder if this was at the heart of some kind of falling out. Shocking news.
Wouldnt be Surprised...
If that was true. I think its obvious Bronco wants more control over the defense…he wants to fix it himself.
Sad News
I always liked Jaime Hill, thought he brought out the best in a lot of players. However, sometimes a shakeup like this is needed to jump-start a struggling team. IT will be interesting to see if Bronco takes a more personal part in the defense…his defene was what helped to bring around the 2005 revival…
Wrubell
is saying (tweeting) that Bronco will completely take over the defensive play-calling. Honestly, what other option does he have at this point in the season?

I think...
This is kind of a low thing to do. Kick the defensive coordinator out after the tough part of the schedule, and take over the defense where the rest of the games will be pretty clear cut (Sans Utah, which is always a toss-up).
This reminds me of Charlie Weiss last year who fired his offensive coordinator after 2 losses in 2 top 10 match ups, and said he was taking over the offense in preparation of a Div-II team the next game.
I say give Hill until the end of the season, at the very least. Especially since it was Bronco who really pushed to bring him onto the staff to begin with.
I don't pour beer on Max Hall's family often, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
Question
I do not want to call Bronco a hypocrite but how come when the QB situation was up in the air early on did he not take any more time to look at or work with that position during practice (I know he went over the film work). He kept working with his position which I think is the nose tackle and the return game. When the defense got lit up last night he out right fires the guy?
I know the defense was not great and Bronco used to make all the defensive plays two years ago, but I dont think it was all the defenses fault. The offense kept calling the same difficult pass play for Jake Heaps to complete.
We will see if this does brings a boost to the team.

It wasn't just lastnight
The last 4 weeks have been awful on defense. You can’t blame him for the injuries but the tackling, etc etc has been awful. I don’t think the QB situation was anything like what’s going on here.
I’m a fan of this I kinda wish he’d take over offense too because the play calling on that side of the ball hasn’t been that great either.

The problem is he probably can't do both at the same time and be effective.
And he’s a defensive guy to begin with, so it makes sense for him to be more hands on on that side of the ball. If the defense had been clicking on all cylinders, maybe he’d try to be more involved in the offense. But a head coach can only do so much .
very true
but so has the offense been equally as bad at times. I think the reason to let go Jaime was because Bronco is a defensive guy and not an offensive guy,

That and...
The defensive woes are more about not being ready and not playing aggressive/on edge where I think the offensive woes are more a factor of freshman being asked to win games.
Oh I know
It was more of a sarcastic statement than anything.

Curious
to see what Staffieri’s reaction to the firing is.
My Take
I am going to write an article right now about it, as a simple comment would not do it justice.
Staffieri should...
know that this is the right call since he was part of the Bronco-led defense that brought BYU back to prominence…
internal stuff
I was on a championship team once in high school with an assistant coach once with an excellent track record and who on the outside looking in was great for and with the team. However he had some issues with the head coach and members of the team. When asked to change his approach he just didn’t want to do it and stood his ground. Ultimately the HC should have let him go because it caused unseen internal strife. But he kept him on and our season ended miserably below expectations. It seems like something similar might be going on here. Sometimes a coaches chemistry or style stops fitting right and the HC has to make an uncomfortable decision. Looking forward to that article.
