OT: MLB Playoff Races
So read after the jump if you follow MLB.
So I have nothing to say about that Utah State game other than the next game can't be soon enough. Even if the team struggles to get another win all season, you can't put this one in the rearview mirror quick enough. So the NL West race came up in the VTF game day thread. We have Atlanta, SD, and SF slugging it out for 2 spots going to the last day of the season. What do you see happening? Who deserves it? Who is your favorite team? Do you remember a race this tight before? I'm a SF Giants fan. We are used to epic failures. Losing on Sunday would be the newest episode of losing when victory was within our grasp. We have "Dirty" (Jonathan Sanchez) going and he has been good lately and has been very good against SD, but he tends to be wild when he is pitching in a pressure situation. Many times he is effectively wild. We'll see. Doesn't seem possible that we could lose 5 straight (4 to SD and 1 to Atlanta) to miss the playoffs, but Giant fans always prepare for he worst. You have to give kudos to the Padres for making this final game meaningful. So tell us who you are rooting for and check in on game days to leave your thoughts.

I am a Cubs fan
but I have also really liked the Braves for almost as long as I can remember. We tried to help out the Braves by beating the Padres 2 out of 3 games but they couldnt take care of business against the Phillies so its still a close race. Im rooting for the Braves over either team but if it has to be a California team I think I’d rather have the Padres in since I developed a dislike for the Giants ever since Barry Bonds was there.

Rise and shout the Cougars are out!!
Curious if...
You have similar feelings towards Sammy Sosa as you have for Barry Bonds?

Sorry this is late...
No I dont have similar feelings towards Sammy as I do towards Barry. Part of it, yes, is because he was on “my team” but the main reason is because I have always felt that Barry Bonds was a cold, bitter person while Sammy was always smiling and acted like he actually enjoyed playing the game that he was gettting paid millions of dollars to play. Lets throw Mark McGuire into the mix too, even though he was a Division rival and I hate the Cardinals, I liked him more than Barry Bonds too.

Fair enough.
Giants fans aren’t oblivious to the ‘roid issue, but we still appreciate Barry for what he is. That Giants fans still love Barry was obvious yesterday as he threw out the first pitch while being showered with cheers. The Barry hate among non-Giant fans is hot as a thousand suns. Maybe it is directed at Barry for some of the other reasons you described, but baseball fans just can’t seem to feel the vitriol towards the myriad of other ’roid abusers that they feel for Bonds. Bonds was a bit pricky off the field. I get that. He was AMAZING on the field, even before he “got big”.

So the Divisional Series matchups are set.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Atlanta-San Francisco
Cincinnati – Philadelphia
Philly is the big favorite to win the National league, probably the WS. Giants, with their pitching, are a favorite to make it to the NLCS and could be dangerous. Atlanta playing to extend Bobby Cox’s goodbye will be tough. Cincinnati has a punchers chance with that lineup, but probably doesn’t have the pitching needed in the playoffs.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
New York – Minnes
Tampa Bay – Texas
None of these teams go into the playoffs on much of a hot streak. Tampa seems to have the most complete team. NY has a murderers row in that lineup but pitching has been a
mess. Minnesota and Texas can mess up the NY-TB ALCS that ESPN has been pushing all year.
Who do you like? What upsets do you see?
My heart says the Giants have a chance, but
my head says Phillies to win it all and neither the NLCS or WS goes 7 games. Upsets? Let’s go with Minnesota over NY.

I'm normally an NL girl and prefer to root for an NL team.
But this year, I hate all but one NL team (the Reds), while I like all but one AL team (Yankees). So, that sucks. I guess I’m rooting for the Reds vs. anyone but the Yankees. But that seems unlikely.
A couple games in...
And we’ve already seen 2 of the best post-season pitching performances of all time. Looking like a NY-TX ALCS.

UPDATE: HALFWAY THRU THE LCS'
American League
Cliff Lee continues the outstanding pitching we’ve seen this post-season and Texas’s lineup is putting up big numbers, especially off of that NY bullpen. Sebathia will try to send this series back to big D. It’s hard to get that last win, but the Yankees are going to have to beat Lee to defend their title.
National League
CODY ROSS?!? Really?!? On the other side, Ibanez is joyless and Howard doesn’t have an RBI. This series is a long way from over and looks likely to continue to be dominated by the pitching. Both teams can shut down an opposing team. Which offense can scratch out a couple of runs? That’ll probably decide the winner.
