BYU Bye brings new Games of Interest

For BYU Cougar fans, today is a slow day with the Cougars being idle.  So what games around the conference are going to be the best to watch today?

At 2pm EST you can watch the San Diego St. Aztecs take on the Wyoming Cowboys.  This should not be much of a game, but a win for the Aztecs will secure their first bowl game bid since 1993. That also means securing their first non-losing season, in as much time.  As a San Diegan, I am looking forward to seeing just a little SDSU success.

But the real game of interest today is...

Star-divide

The Utah Utes at the Air Force Falcons.  This game kicks off at 7:30 EST and marks the first week of the season where the Utes have to play a quality opponent.  The Falcons are beat up, but I would not underestimate them returning home to take on Utah.   Utah has historically struggled with Air Force, especially in Colorado Springs.  While I would expect Utah to win the game, nothing is guaranteed against the fight and determination of the cadets.

Those are the two games I'm watching from the conference today.  New Mexico Lobos v Colorado St. Rams seems to be a waste of time, although I am rooting for a Rams victory.  Then to round out the day the TCU Horned Frogs take on the UNLV Rebels.  I think we all know how that game is going to end.  One thing to watch for in that game is to see if TCU continues to struggle early against inferior opponents.

So far this year, TCU looks very beatable to me, which leads me to believe that when its all said and done, the Utes will be the conference champs and the ones headed to a BCS bowl.

Here's to hoping...

that the Cadets beat Utah. I also hope TCU beats Utah at RES. The last thing we need is Ute fans bragging about 3 BCS games. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm sorry to disappoint you Nate but....

I would disagree with a few of Markell’s points above. The Utes have beaten the Cadet’s at their place 3 times in a row. They have not played many good teams but they beat down each of their opponents with some style while sitting their starters for most of the 4th Q. They have beaten the team projected to be in the BCS from the Big East and a team that beat TX in TX and who when OK beat them they jumped 4 spots in the polls. The Utes should do ok today but next week will be a true slug fest being anyone’s best guess. I think it is time for us all to recognize that the Utes are pretty good this year and we can’t beat them up for who they haven’t played. At the end of the year when Pitt is in the BCS and ISU is in a better bowl than us we will realize that they were tested. I hope they do well today as next week stands to bring alot of attention to the West Coast and the State in particular.

Hind site is always 20/20

Of course its easy to make comments now that the game is over. But I would say that my initial prediction was not too far off. Air turned the ball over 5 times against the U and were still in the game.

After the opening drive by Utah I thought it would a route but the Cadets settled in. I can’t be convinced that Pitt is a quality opponent. They may be in a BCS Conference but that conference seems weaker than Conference USA to me. Maybe even the sunbelt.

Iowa States win over Oklahoma has made them the only other quality win in my book.

Not to say Utah isn’t good. I think they are very good and will go on record today as saying they will beat TCU in front of a college game day crowd next weekend.

i think TCU has got it

This is going to be a great game, especially since it will be in SLC. Iowa State has a win at Texas (28-21), but they got routed by Utah (68-27) and Oklahoma (52-0). So I don’t really think Utah has ANY quality wins.

The problem is that TCU doesn’t really have a quality win either. They have beaten Oregon St (who lost at Washington) and Baylor (broke into the rankings this past week and just beat Texas in Austin, like Iowa St.). So the Iowa St and Baylor wins for each team are a wash.

So, all things considered, those two teams have had a pretty weak schedule this year. I think TCU takes it based on Andy Dalton’s experience vs. Jordan Wynn. I think the Utes are going to have to be stronger in the run game than they are.

I, too, would rather face an undefeated Utah team, but in some twisted logic that I cannot explain will be rooting for TCU next week.

I'd rather

the Utes win out and then get smacked around by BYU at RES. It would be so much funner to beat a BSC bound Utah. I would relish it for the rest of my life.

Nice thought...

but it looks like the only game the Utes could lose is next week vs TCU. BYU would need a different team to show up (same personnel, different “team”) to beat Utah this year.
