Fredette, Cougars defeat Aggies, 78-72

BYU was 7 of 26 from three-point range.  (Fredette, 5/14.) Utah State was 7 of 11 from deep.  The Aggies outshot the Cougars 48% to 38% overall.  But BYU only committed 9 turnovers and made 8 more free throws despite having just 4 more attempts.  A nice win over a good team that should challenge for the WAC title again.  Too bad Tai Wesley couldn't have simply crossed the street and played for the Cougars like his older bro.  Kid is legit.

BYU vs. USU

I definitely don’t want to come off as a BYU hater but I was down at the game…..a couple of things caught my eye. #1-BYU should act like they’ve been there. You’re the 23rd ranked team in the country, you have an all-american. If Emery thinks and says BYU is as good as he says they are, you would have thought he had just won the national championship after that win. Undefeated this season, I don’t think so. They are a good team don’t get me wrong but they have many weaknesses they need to get fixed before they play teams in their league. Their bigs are not good enough, especially if you let Tai Wesley go off like that. Also, I would let Abouo shoot all night long. Having played him before in Logan, I was not impressed and am still not impressed. #2-One of my favorite sayings is players win games, coaches lose them and refs ruin them. That was some of the most horrible officiating and in no way do you foul out the best player and call a flagrant foul on a kid that didn’t even try to hit Collinsworth as he tried reaching in. Especially at that point in the game. #3-A BYU fan after the game came up to a girl that goes to Utah State and is Catholic grabbed her and said to here to the effects of “see the righteous will always win.” What a freaking great example of the church. Not that this girl is trying to join the church right now but that certainly doesn’t help our chances. Not all but some BYU fans need to understand you represent the church and you’re gonna have the bulls-eye on your back. You’re just gonna have to take crap. I go to Utah State and I understand our fans can be out of control sometimes. I don’t agree with what they say and do but they are who they are. They don’t represent the church and just because of the way some clueless BYU fans act it just eggs them on.

So a few morons are representative of BYU as a whole?

Puhleeeeeease. Aggie students pull religious crap all the time that doesn’t reflect favorly on their school. it goes both ways. That’s how rivalry games are.

I didn’t like the Tai Wesley call, however, i don’t agree that it was a “bad” call. Tai was swinging his elbows and they came pretty close to Collinsworth’s chin. I don’t think Tai was being malicious and I do think that Collinsworth’s head was in the wrong place, but you can’t blame refs for trying to protect the players. It was a flagrant though. I really disagreed with that.

What’s wrong with BYU players being excited about beating an instate rival? USU doesn’t get pumped after beating us? Hogwash. Let the players celebrate a win without making it sound like they are cocky.

Finally, it’s the second game of the season. Every team has weaknesses and it takes the first part of the season to try to figure them out and how each player fits in the scheme. Rotations will change. Matchups will change. Shooting streaks will stop and end. It’s only the second game of the season.

For the Love of the Game

Stockton to Malone- The perfect combination!!

"I think he just said, 'Oh my Gosh,' or whatever they say in Provo."- ESPN talking about QB. Max Hall after BYU defeated third ranked Oklahoma (2009).

I don't think they called the foul at the end a flagrant, just intentional, which people still may or not agree with.

(I haven’t actually seen it myself.)

Also, it was called based on a new rule that started this season, and apparently the refs made a point of bringing it to the attention of both teams before the game.

Weaver never said those fans represent BYU as a whole.

That kid w/ the USU girl needs to be punched. Get a clue people.

That said, I’ll take the win. The Aggies are a good team and are my pick to win the WAC. The Cougars (including Jax) should consider themselves fortunate and learn from their mistakes.

Abouo's jumper

has actually improved a lot. He was terrible from deep against USU, but he has shot over 40% from 3 as a Cougar. I actually like the fact that he hoisted six of them up there against the Aggies. Proves he has confidence and if Rose didn’t tell him to stop, then the coaching staff must feel he can make those shots also.
