If Mendenhall wants to re-write the rules for recruiting, good for him. There's way too much deception and entitlement going on in recruiting. It's pretty obvious from the details of the Schwenke situation that his commitment wasn't 100 percent, and Mendenhall has always said he only wants kids who really want to be at BYU. The Cougars will still have one of its best recruiting classes ever even without Schwenke, and if the kid wants to go somewhere else, it's best he and BYU parts ways.
In my mind, Mendenhall was simply holding Schwenke to his commitment. More coaches should refuse to be manipulated by 18-year-old kids and their parents."

At BYU they recruit a different type of player. You don’t get kids with just talent. You get kids that have a decent amount of talent, good ethics and morals, and a superior work ethic. That is the new BYU much different from the Level years, where you practiced hard and played hard. BYU is the school that will out-work their opponents on and off the field. Not all 18 year old kids can handle that. Not all coaches can handle that. During the season 70-80 hour weeks. That is BYU football. The commitment to play at a higher level is made everyday!
