Key Matchup: Kawhi Leonard vs. Tyler Haws

Leonard is the biggest reason the Aztecs are 20-7 despite the departures of Lorrenzo Wade and Kyle Spain.  Really, Haws is Leonard’s main competition for MWC Freshman of the Year.  When Leonard explodes, SDSU is almost unbeatable: the Aztecs have just three losses when Leonard scores in double-digits (14-3).  But what makes Leonard truly special is his rebounding ability.  He is roughly the same height and weight of Tavernari – about 15 lbs. heavier than Haws – but he averages more rebounds per game than Haws and Tavernari combined (9.63 to 9.428).  That’s good for 31st in the nation.

But the rest of the Haws-Leonard isn’t nearly as lopsided.  In their first matchup Haws’ finished with 17 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 32 minutes.  Leonard took 5 more shots than Haws but finished with just 16 points (along with 11 boards).  This is the usual for Haws this season – the dude is flat out efficient.  In fact, his 62.9% true shooting percentage is good for 54th in the country and 3rd in the conference.

For real

Here’s the good thing though, BYU won’t miss him a ton next year.

haws

looks rough. has to finish the open 5 footer and breakaway layup

by Howi on Feb 24, 2010 6:35 PM PST reply actions

BYU is playing some sloppy ball

These turnovers and poor shot choice is killing us! Haws is pretty off.

they look great pushing the transition

when fredette is leading the break. whats new right. but haws has to pick it up, or leave in abuou

Can't say enough

good things about JT lately

by sroufe on Feb 24, 2010 7:36 PM PST reply actions

yeah...

so important to byu’s chances, and he’s really stepped it up lately. Having said that, I’m waiting for him to make a bone-headed play that costs the team at some point.

I haven't

seen too many dumb plays from him this season, just the poor shooting throughout most of the non-conference. He’s just so streaky with his jumper it’s terrifying…

by sroufe on Feb 24, 2010 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

He had multiple against Utah St. in crunch time...

and yes, his shooting early was really frustrating.

Next year

I expect a triple double from Emery: points, rebounds, steals ;)

M not sure if you can see it on tv

But White (#32 for sdsu) sure whines a bunch! After missed ft’s, missed shots, or not getting the ball passed to him.

As much as I absolutely hate

the whole “that’s another Cougar FIRST DOWN” in football…that’s about how much I LOVE the crowd counting the opponents’ steps to the bench.

absolutely agreed...

one of the best moments of any game at the MC
