UNLV Runnin Rebels
@ BYU Cougars

Friday, Mar 12, 2010, 8:30 PM PST
Mountain West Tournament - Semifinals - Thomas & Mack Center - Las Vegas, NV

Complete Coverage >

Fredette tops 40 again as BYU advances - BYU Athletics
Rose a finalist for Skip Prosser award - BYU Athletics

BYU must shoot better tonight than the last time they played UNLV.  In their 88-74 loss, the Cougars shot 38% overall - but the starters were a dismal 29%.  Part of that can be attributed to forcing lots of perimeter jumpers in an attempt to catch up to the Rebels' hot start.  Obviously, BYU can get away with a mediocre first half against a team like TCU, but not UNLV.

Another note in review of the Cougars' loss to the Rebels is how Tyler Haws had a below-average performance offensively that game but may not play tonight.  From Greg Wrubell:

"Tyler Haws (eye) was visiting a local doctor this afternoon and did not participate in the team's shoot-around at Cox Pavilion. Word is the eye was still very swollen today.  Haws' status for tonight would have to be considered questionable at best; if he can't play, it's likely Mike Loyd would take Haws' place in the starting lineup."

If that's the case, here's how the starting match-ups will likely look tonight:

Fredette - Anthony Marshall
Emery - Tre'Von Willis
Loyd - Oscar Bellfield
Hartsock - Chase Stanback
Miles - Brice Massamba

You also figure Abouo's minutes will increase due to Haws' absence - which is a good thing because of 1) they way Charles has been terrific offensively over the past few weeks, and 2) Abouo's athleticism is much needed against the Rebels and a nice counter to Matt Shaw off of Lon Kruger's bench.

Kruger has substituted Marshall into his starting lineup in place of Kendall Wallace and the freshman responded last night with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists against the Utes.  Just another weapon the Cougars, and likely Fredette (since Emery will probably guard Willis again), will have to account for tonight.  It should be a thriller...

GO COUGARS!!!

Lunardi (ESPN)'s Bracketology Update

He know has the Cougars as a 6 seed in the East Region (vs. Wake Forest). Yikes…we really need this game tonight to make a strong case for a 4 seed and/or getting into the West Region.

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 3:11 PM PST reply actions

How did that happen?

Wondering if some of the upsets in the Big East (and elsewhere) have pushed some higher seeds back, pushing BYU back. They now have to win to have any shot of at least a 5 seed. Having said that, reading Wrubell’s site this morning, over the last decade, the 6-seed has been more successful in advancing past the first round than the 5-seed.

It obviously depends on

who we’re playing as a 5 or 6 seed. Glockner’s (CNNSI) bracket, before last night’s win, has BYU as a 5 seed against Georgia Tech in San Jose…

I really, really, really don’t want to play the Yellow Jackets. That’s exactly the type of 5-12 upset waiting to happen. BYU wouldn’t get a single rebound with Lawal and Favors in the paint.

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

shifting

is happening all over the place. top teams have been dropping like flies, giving these mid-pack teams chances to make a case to move up their seeding positions, such as notre dame. obviously this hurts byu who is always overlooked, especially with the tourney games on the worst sports networks (the mtn., cbssports, and versus). good luck finding them! i know i have to stream the game online tonight.

so as i see it, the only chance byu has is to win this tournament, otherwise, the seeding committee will let them slip to a 6 seed. A LOT on the line tonight

haws

has the tendency to disappear at times. so far the two games against unlv he had the following statlines:
12 pts 6 reb 3 assists 2 steals
5 pts 3 reb 0 assists 0 steals

his poor road performance there was rough to watch. but so was everyone else’s. i guess this is a net loss to not have haws. BUT i have great confidence in what abouo and loyd bring.

by Howi on Mar 12, 2010 5:24 PM PST reply actions

where we most need Abouo is on the boatfs

He is as scrappy and tough when it comes down to get the rebounds. Like Emery he’s very aggressive and fights like a dog for each one. If we plan on winning we have to outrebound them.

new mexico and sdsu

are in a battle right now! i am all for sdsu wearing them out, but i want the lobos in the finals

by Howi on Mar 12, 2010 6:48 PM PST reply actions

Absolutely

The Aztecs need to run them up and down the court until the end, and the Lobos need to pull it out. That would help BYU’s SOS immensely. Of course, they still have to get by the Runnin’ Rebels tonight. So very nervous…

i am completely going crazy

waiting for this game. i admittedly put too much into sports but when your team finally comes through it is worth it (i hope, none of mine have won anything since 1995 braves)

but this byu team has me nervous, but HOPEFUL. i think we got it but hearing the noise of the rebel fans is going to piss me off all game long! i hope fredette can shut them up early!

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 9:18 PM PST reply actions

It was said earlier: boards

UNLV getting easy shots, and draining from the outside. The good news is BYU is hanging close this time and just needs to put a run together. They’ve had uncharacteristic turnovers tonight and haven’t shot as well as they usually do. They need to find their form and they’ll be fine.

Vanquish the Foe, a BYU Cougars blog at SB Nation

by Layton on Mar 12, 2010 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

Same as last night

1) attack the rim with Jimmer, Loyd and co. – don’t settle for three’s and get lots of FT’s
2) don’t turn the ball over
3) get back in transition – no easy buckets

Teams generally shoot worse from the perimeter in the second half and UNLV is no exception. Also, BYU doesn’t have anybody in foul trouble (i.e. Davies – 0 fouls) so that’s good. I think we’re in good position here. Just have to play smart and they’ll let us come back. There’s a reason we’ve only lost 4 games this season.

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 9:27 PM PST up reply actions

Rebels shoot 61% for the half

on their home floor and they’re still only up 7

I have the gamecast up now...

Long Beach St. is okay – no better than the bottom tier MWC. UOP should win but have a hard time with UC Santa Barbara tomorrow. Can’t say I’ve followed them much this season. Only have time for one team;)

big game:

anything besides regular season. losing a bunch of first round evenly matched games would say otherwise

by Howi on Mar 12, 2010 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

Texas A&M was just the better

team the past two seasons and Cummard simply wasn’t a guy you could rely on to score in the clutch. Rose inherited a team that won 9 games the season prior and has had nothing but 20+ win seasons since and has won or at least competed for conference championships. Not much you can ask for in my opinion. BYU isn’t exactly the best school for recruiting outside of Utah and Idaho.

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

About UNLV's streak

It’s not like they’re Air Force. They’ve had some terrific teams these past few seasons and there’s a reason Lon Kruger has coached in the NBA.

As for tonight, hard to put the blame on Rose. He made the necessary switch to Davies. He made the right defensive adjustments (i.e. zone alterations in the 2nd half). He lost his 3rd leading scorer and one of the most efficient offensive players in the country – the night before. His team forced more turnovers than they lost. His team made their free throws.

In summary, Dave Rose is an excellent coach. UNLV is a tourney-worthy team and any team worthy of the NCAA tournament and fighting to verify such is going to be a very, very hard out — especially on their home floor.

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

dave rose

has proven to be an excellent coach when he faces good to mediocre talent. when byu faces equal talent (excellent teams) they rarely win. BYU can be summed up in a simple way. DEMOLISH bad teams but cant hold their own against excellent teams. even when they are excellent too.

losing 8 in a row because the coach was once in the nba is not a good reason. if rose was a great coach himself in big moments, i could see 3-5 being more reasonable.

by Howi on Mar 12, 2010 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

The MWC

is doing itself a disservice by having the tournament in Vegas. At a neutral site the Cougars would now be a 4 seed and the Lobos possibly a 2 seed.

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 10:44 PM PST reply actions

It is an excuse

but one that ANY other program would make under similar circumstances.

by sroufe on Mar 12, 2010 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

of course it sucks

but sooner or later BYU has to suck it up and win there. to take the lead with 2 minutes left and then put the ball into the hands of two guys who just made their way into the starting lineup isnt smart by rose.

a missed free throw from davies and a forced shot by loyd to basically end our chances. the ball needs to go to jimmer and jt, no exceptions.

by Howi on Mar 12, 2010 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

ridiculous

noah 1-4 fg with 2 points.
davies 1-3 with 3 points

they each had 6 rebounds but im not sure if they played good D. Massamba had 13 points (which i think the announcers said was a career high.)

so dave rose answer me this: if these guys arent bringing offense to the table tonight, why not put in miles who is you supposed defensive stopper?

by Howi on Mar 12, 2010 11:03 PM PST reply actions
