Cougars fall to Rebels, 70-66
I still believe. Hard to put the blame on Dave Rose. He made the necessary switch to Brandon Davies. He made the right defensive adjustments (i.e. zone alterations in the 2nd half). He lost his third leading scorer and one of the most efficient offensive players in the country the night before. His team forced more turnovers than they lost. His team made their free throws.
In summary, Dave Rose is an excellent coach. UNLV is a tourney-worthy team and any team worthy of the NCAA tournament and fighting to verify such is going to be a very, very hard out — especially on their home floor.
Now then, let's pray for a 5 seed.

agreed
except that he made the right move to davies. that was the wrong move
his statline… 1-3 fg 3 points 6 reb and a HUGE missed free throw
worst of all he allowed unlv’s massamba to go off for a VERY efficient 13 points. if davies is going to be ineffective on offense then the right move is to put your defensive man in the game who has loads more experience. miles should have played down the stretch
Rose went with Davies
because of the game’s pace and because he’s a factor on offense – unlike Miles. Sure, Miles can set a good screen, but he can’t get out in transition, he can’t hit a jumper outside 8 feet, and he has no significant post moves to speak of. The Cougars weren’t scoring efficiently last night because the Rebel defense forced them to take too many perimeter shots. Hartsock and Miles just aren’t athletic enough to battle with those guys. But at least Hartsock can shoot out to 16 feet legitimately.
This is certainly a debatable issue but I feel Rose would make the same decision again. The zone Rose implemented late in the game was what allowed the Cougars to nearly win the game and it worked decently without Miles. As for the missed free throw – that’s going to happen. Dude is a freshman and he’ll get better in time…
Lunardi has us a 5 seed today. I think that’s fair. I know the Polls have nothing to do with it, if you think of it this way, no way we drop out of the top 20 (all 5 seeds and above) for losing at UNLV. Especially with teams around us are losing as well.
Most likely, we’ll be a 5 or 6. Scheduling difficulties could push us to a 6, but I think we deserve a 5. 3 of our 5 loses are by 4 or less points. All to tournament teams. Well, the same 2 teams, lol.
That foul on Fredette at the end was BS. It was a clean swipe, and it was a 4 point swing because we had the fast break, easy layup for the go-ahead bucket. It was the game… At the same time, you can’t rely on refs to make the right call. It was too close for comfort – you need a cushion, especially with homecourt referee advantage. Our offense was stagnant. They were up on our grill all night. Refs letting it go. We should have penetrated more, but I hope there is a real lesson here. Tourney teams are going to play us this rough. Refs will probably let things fly. We need to get tougher. No way we should have lost to UNLV and UNM twice. I think we are a better team, but we didn’t prove it.
I hate to say this, but after seen just about every game, and following this team so passionately… it was a disappointing season. I know we’ll probably get a 5 seed, and that’s one seed away from our best seed ever. Plus this team has the most W’s in BYU history, but still. For the best team in 2 decades NOT to win the regular season OR tourney title, it’s a real let-down.
Very disappointing. We had some injuries and illnesses all year long, so I cut them some slack, but that doesn’t take away from the awful pain I feel from being let down. The only thing to redeem this season is to make it, AT LEAST, to the Sweet 16.
Basketball gods, I pray you, give us that West Region.

update this morning after the loss to UNLV: BYU moved UP the board to a 5 seed into the West region. ummmm, really?! that’s very surprising and if that is the case I won’t believe it!
This is true
Lunardi does have BYU up to a 5 seed in the West Region, even after the loss last night. And, yes, he does now have all four teams as locks in the tourney.
Lunardi’s move for BYU has more to do with New Mexico losing to the Aztecs (a true bubble team) on a neutral site than anything else. He gave lenience to BYU because they lost a very close game to the Rebels who were already in the tournament, in what was without question a home game.
Unfortunately, if you don’t believe us, you need to spend $10 and become an ESPN insider…

Well...
I guessed on why Lunardi moved BYU up to a 5 seed. But it sounded good and actually makes sense seeing how only one of those teams (BYU and NM) would be protected in the West, and he had NM projected in the West assuming they’d win the tournament.

Can you imagine the ESA in the Sweet 16?!
I’ve been let down too much on Selection Sunday to hope for the West Region, but can you imagine? I know we gotta get out of the first two rounds (which is ridiculously hard to do, just ask previous BYU teams), but the thought of the ESA full of BYU fans makes me giddy.
And I will do everything I can to be there. I can see Jimmer lighting it up for all of us to go wild.
Is it possible?!

what would top it off
is that Duke is the probable 1 seed in the west. imagine duke vs byu in the ESA. WOW! I have been a duke fan my entire life, but i would definitely be for byu in that game
Yeah, I think Duke an interesting scenario. Miami (4-13 ACC) almost just topped them! However, they are efficient. Of all the #1s, I’d prefer to face Duke or Syracuse. (I think Jimmer can break down that zone.) No Kansas or Kentucky!
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We haven’t exactly made much noise in the Tourney as of late. :)

MWC tourney venue
Does anyone know the details on why this is always in Vegas? is it a long term situation or do they decide year by year? Everyone in the conference, besides UNLV of course, would benefit from a change. But I heard Tom Holmoe votes in favor of the Vegas location. Can we get some info on this
Great Questions...and answers
Like everything else in college sports, the reason why the tournament is in Vegas is money—and it will be there through 2013. When the tournament was in Denver, the tournament was fair, but the league wasn’t earning money. As soon as they moved it to Vegas, more and more people went to the games and stayed and played longer. It’s not hard to fathom why people would want to spend time in Vegas over Denver.
As for Holmoe, I doubt he actually likes the tournament in Vegas. However, he knows that he’s going to get more seats in the seats in Vegas than he would in Denver, and so that generates more money for the athletic program. San Diego is too far away (for a majority of schools) to host the tournament, and that would be the only other real option.
My issue has always been this: why not have the tournament at The Orleans Arena in Vegas, which happens to be where BYU upset Louisville a couple years ago. That would certainly be more fair for all involved.

do you guys think
that home court comes from the actual court you play on? or does it come from crowd noise and proximity to home(so no travel/hotel inconvenience)?
i am curious about this because its like BYU playing in the ESA, seems like obvious home court advantage, however, its not like the cougars ever play there anyway. so moving the MWC tourney to the Orleans would reduce that advantage, but to how much of a degree?
There definitely is a difference between playing in your own arena and in another arena nearby. They still get a homecourt advantage, but just not as much. That’s why I saw it’s “somewhat” of a compromise. I understand the $$$ issue. The least they could do is move it to The Orleans.
Pomeroy would call it a Semi-Away game. :) Not quite away, but clearly there’s an advantage for UNLV.

For what it's worth
I actually think the crowd noise and the proximity to home play second fiddle to the actual arena. What I mean by this is when you read or hear interviews with some of the NBA’s greatest shooters of all time (i.e. Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Jeff Hornacek, etc.) they all say one thing: you shoot better when you’re familiar with the arena because of the “shooting lines”… backdrop angles, etc…
As a player, what would you rather have: an opponent who’s uncomfortable with the sight lines, and as a consequence, has a harder time making shots (leveling the playing field) or a loud crowd? It’s pretty obvious if there had to be an advantage you’d want it to be an uncomfortable shooting team. The crowd can’t beat you.

of course
UNLV cant hardly score against SDSU in the championship. Why can they shoot BYU out of the gym everytime there?
