Independence...The New Super Conference?
I don't think so, but it would appear BYU got some other schools thinking it may be the way to go. ESPN reported this morning that Hawaii is looking at leaving the WAC and going Indepenant in football while placing its other sports in the WCC.
Why this doesn't make sense for Hawaii - What will Hawaii do for TV Coverage? They don't have the money to front a new network, they don't have an existing network and being so far west they lack a great TV deal unless they want to start playing all their games at 10 or 11am.
Why it does make sense for Hawaii - Scheduling should not be too tough for the Warriors. Who wouldn't want a midseason trip to the Islands? The National Title contenders may not want the distraction, but there are plenty of big conference schools who wouldn't mind taking the trip, to be sure.

As I explained to someone an an earlier post ,
Independence isn’t as great as many make it out to be. Even Notre Dame is facing pressure to join a big conference due to the uncertainty of college football (i.e financial circumstances and talk of super conferences). Plus, most big name teams from the SEC and Big-12 are looking for opponents they know they can crush because winning their conference is tough enough. I realize there’s always exceptions to the rule (such as Texas agreeing to play BYU) but you aren’t gonna get big names on a regular basis.
Another huge point to consider is the bowls: most of the non BCS bowls have tie-ins. Independence clearly limits your options given your not in a conference, thus you have have zero tie-ins with any bowl. The only way these teams can be invited is if that conference doesn’t have enough teams that qualify. That will always be at the bottom end of the bowl pool. The top bowls will always have teams that they are contractually obligated to invite. Again, there are exceptions (like Navy playing in the Armed Forces Bowl) but for the most part ,the current system would only hurt good independent teams.
