Is BYU Ready for the World Series of Poker?
ESPN's Joe Schad reported this morning that Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson may let BYU have their own TV network. The Texas-Sized Bluff may have paid off for the Cougars. Even it it was not a bluff, if the end result is BYU staying in the MWC and has the opportunity to broadcast on BYUTV in HD across the country (something The Mtn can't do) they end up with the best case scenario.
I would imagine that if such a deal were reached BYU would be able to keep a large sum, if not all, of the TV revenue generated throught BYUTV.

This is probably the best of both worlds(for the short term)....
BYU gets the exposure and money from their own network, while the remaining sports remain in a much more solid and steady conference. Guaranteed appearances with TCU and BSU over the next 2-3 years will still be excellent match-ups. However, something NEEDS to happen with solidifying the bottom-feeders of the MWC. CSU, Wyoming, SDSU and even UNLV NEED to step up their games. Hopefully adding in-state rivals for SDSU in FSU and UNLV with Nevada may help bolster some needed sparks in those institutions.
As far as I’m concerned Wyoming is pure dead weight and CSU is going through that purification process as well.
Rivalry of little importance
It is going to be interesting to see what happens with the in-state rivalry between Fresno and SDSU. They may both be in California, but geographically SDSU is closer to UNLV. The other down side is that there are other in-state rivalries for Californians to get excited about…USC/UCLA, Cal/Stanford, UCLA/Cal.
The good news is that SDSU seems to be excited about it, so maybe it will further motivate them to jump to the top tier.
As for CSU? I just don’t see how they went from Champs to Chumps so fast with no signs of climbing out. Wyoming has merely ever flirted with the above average, so not much is expected from them. It has to be hard to recruit someone to Laramie.
If the MWC lets BYU have their own tv deal, I would hope that would include
getting some matchups on national tv. I’m not sure a combo of The Mtn and BYU-tv does much good for exposure, at least in the short term. At least to begin with BYU-TV isn’t going to get many eyeballs (other than BYU fans). I really think we need to get at least something going on ESPN or CBS or somewhere.
I agreed with your point in a previous post that recruiting is going to start suffering at some point (especially with Utah’s increased exposure), and I’m not sure BYU-TV is going to help there, even if it brings in some additional revenue.
