Debate Over: BYU's Nelson Out for Season

The great debate at BYU is officially over, and now we all get what we asked for...Junior QB Riley Nelson is having season-ending surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, which unfortunately for him, doesn't give him an excuse as to why he couldn't throw the football.  The injury occurred presumably during the first quarter of the game against Florida State.

"It’s never fun to be injured," Nelson said. "I’m getting it taken care of as soon as possible so I can start my recovery and be back to help the team in the future."

maybe maybe not....

knowing a little about how Coach Mendenhall works, it is my personal feeling that he was never going to make a decision. I think he wanted to have Coach Anae or Coach Doman step up and make the big decision.

I believe that Bronco knew all along who he wanted, but he likes to watch/help people grow and he usually likes to see that come through doing something difficult on your own. He wanted the OC and QB Coach to step up and be accountable for a HUGE decision.

That’s my two cents. So, no doubt, somebody got an out, but while the fans may think it is Bronco, I really think that it was Anae and Doman.

but he is the head coach

and that is his job to make a decision, and especially in this situation he should have stepped in after a few games.

Less wins this year, hopefully more next

Looking at the schedule, with Nelson as an option I think BYU loses to TCU and probably Utah for an 8-4 season. Without him I think BYU will lose against Nevada simply because Heaps is still easily confused by any sort of complicated defensive schemes and Nelson could have run effectively on Nevada’s defense, and maybe one more random loss for a 7-5 or 6-6 season.

Hopefully this pays dividends next year, especially if the last 2 or 3 games yet to be scheduled are against BCS-conference squads like Clemson or Texas Tech as has been rumored.
