Thoughts on Dantley Walker?

So I honestly had no idea that this kid even existed and much less that BYU was in the running for his services until rebelfan1 over at Mountain West Connection posted that Dantley Walker has verbally chosen UNLV over BYU. (Here's the link: http://www.mwcconnection.com/2011/2/16/1997731/dantley-walker-gives-verbal-commitment-to-unlv-basketball#comments )

Walker is LDS and will serve a mission before reporting to UNLV for the 2013-2014 season and UNLV fans and media seem to be pretty excited over that recruiting class.

Video of Walker from the Deseret News and my scouting report from what I was able to see in that video after the jump... (and sorry the video is silent, thats how youtube had it)

This kid has a bevy of ball-handling skills, speed and tenacity while driving to the hoop, good hands on defense, and Jimmer-esque long range bombs and scoop shots. He now owns the Nevada state single game scoring record with 73 points that he accomplished a few games ago. Also this season he has scored 60+ points three other times recording a triple double in one of those games.

The only knock on Walker is that he is small. He is 5' 11" and weighs 155 pounds. He plays in Nevada's 2A classification but even so has been stealing the attention from Nevada powerhouses and traditionally nationally ranked Bishop Gorman, Mater Dei, and Findlay Prep high schools.

Now if you've read this entire post you're probably wondering "Why is this on a BYU blog?" Good question. Well for starters he is Mormon and BYU was a front-runner for his services but it looks like BYU hasn't offered him a scholarship yet so that's why he committed to UNLV. This could just be a ploy to get other schools to start recruiting him more heavily and with the announcement that he will serve a mission he still has a few years to change his mind if BYU or another school shows more interest in him. Even if he does stick with UNLV after his mission BYU won't be in the MWC and we won't have to worry about playing against him very often, if at all.

So my question to you is, will Dantley Walker stay with UNLV or do you think BYU can pull a coup while he is on a mission and convince him to sign with the Cougars instead?

I saw a post on him over a cougar board

By a UNLV fan saying young Mr. Walker’s whole family are rebel fans. And like you said BYU hasn’t given him an offer yet. But he’s not ganna start playing till after his mission so like you said he has plenty of time to change his mind. Will he? He has to get an offer first, but I don’t know.

on the monday ksl radio show

a few weeks ago coach dave rice was on talking about recruiting and said they were all tapped out for offers this year. having to manage guys going on missions has got to be difficult for this staff. but maybe he could pull a max hall and come here after his mission.

as far as cougarboard goes, that is the whole reason i wanted to become more active here at VTF and get this site going more. there are some people on that site that are just arrogant and think they “own” BYU fandom. i hope VTF can raise its profile more and more.
