In response to the two Mendenhall posts and his coaching
I thought I would check out the record in the "big games" over his tenure. Big games being defined as ranked teams, bowl games, and games against "BCS competition." Here's what I found.

Tulsa?
Why the two Tulsa regular season games?

I don’t think they were ranked either time …. but a W and an L in each column, so 16-19 instead of 17-20

Nope
I don’t even have a valid reason for that, except we just rematched them in the bowl and that might be why. Doesn’t change the data much though.
I bleed blue . . . Cougars, Cowboys, Jazz, Real. Its all blue.
Academically Ineligible

Basically...
Seems like the analysis from the past two articles was pretty spot on. Mendenhall is a good to very good coach, but not great.
If you figure that in the coming years, BYU will play 6 to 8 “big games” a year, they will go about .500 in them. That will put them around 8 or 9 wins a year. With great years getting to 10 or 11, and down years with only 6 or 7.
That’s not too bad… Not sure many places would be talking about replacing a coach with those results. And as the other articles pointed out, there is no obviously better candidate to replace him with…
