Game Thread: St Mary's at BYU

St. Mary's, Calif. Gaels at BYU Cougars, Jan 28, 2012 6:00 PM PST

It's time! The Marriott Center is packed to the brim, and it's revenge time. Sounds like Stephen Rogers may get a few minutes tonight, and that Dave Rose plans to mix up defenses a bit more in an effort to keep the Gaels at bay. Join the discussion!

BOOOO

Cougar faithful throwing trash is the first scene I see when I turn the game on. Should I be concerned?

Yeah they are the legit team this year from the WCC.

BYU just needs to accept they are the #2 team this year and beat down Zaga to prove it. Get a full head of steam and hope to get St. Mary in the conference tourny and beat them then.

Just makes me mad that we can’t run with a team that lost to Denver and got blown out by Baylor (yeah same Baylor we almost took down).

From the few minutes I watched in the first half

BYU is rushing it. They need to settle down. I know on the steal, Davies should of reset the entire play unless he had a quick option to pass it out. Here is hoping that they come out and play the game their way.

I don't want to be negative but it ain't looking pretty.

We are down by 23. We are starting to play better defense (perimeter defense is something to be desired right now). But since after the San Diego game we have shot .080 (LMU), .182 (Pepp), and .208 (VT) from behind the arc. Right now we are shooting .125

Unless our defense decides to show up and shut them down for a while, we either need to get back to shooting threes like they are free throws or abuse the paint to get three point plays.

What the heck are we doing out there?!?!?!?!?!

SO out of sync and just not hitting shots at all! I’m tired of guys out there looking like a putz! Carlino and Abouo are sending me thru the roof tonight!

by vaughnzipper on Jan 28, 2012 7:30 PM PST reply actions

Abouo, at least, is not feeling well.

And really, I think St. Mary’s is just flat better. BYU not playing well, but would be tough to beat them either way, I think.

I agree they are better but where's the heart???

There is no reason why we should be down this much. We are making way to many stupid errors. And the refs are treating St. Mary’s like they’re a team full of Kobe Bryants!

Abouo has been pretty crappy this year even when he’s healthy. Not sure why we have him in there when he’s sick?

by vaughnzipper on Jan 28, 2012 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

The refs have made bad calls both ways.

And I generally don’t like questioning “heart.” I haven’t seen them giving up or not playing hard. Doesn’t mean they’re playing well.

And they’ve already cut the lead down. I’d say that’s some “heart”.

by holly96 on Jan 28, 2012 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

Not every bad play is due to lack of "heart".

I’m just never going to be one questioning something we can’t see.

by holly96 on Jan 28, 2012 7:43 PM PST up reply actions

Your opinion

But heart is one of the biggest tools in the game, something you can’t teach but very much visible (see Tim Tebow). Right now I see a couple of guys out there who are getting caught on their heels and not showing they want back in this.

by vaughnzipper on Jan 28, 2012 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

I never said "heart" doesn't exist.

I just mean fans way too often equate bad play to lack of heart, when it’s not always the case.

I love me some Noah

Everybody talks about how it was going to be Davie’s team. Its really Noah’s.

Just thinking the same thing

Although Austin has a lot of potential. I’d like to see one of our guards take some pride and protect the basket. Cusick has done a pretty good job tonight.

Has BYU played Gonzaga at all yet? I guess not.

I’m used to the MWC schedule where the same order of teams just happens twice, reversing home/away the 2nd time through.

Nope next game is home against them.

Late Feb is the away game. We still haven’t played Portland either.

WWWOOOWWW!!!!!

How could that even be viewed as a foul on Carlino???

by vaughnzipper on Jan 28, 2012 8:04 PM PST reply actions

That's a wrap!

Only chance at post season play will be winning the conference tourney now.

by vaughnzipper on Jan 28, 2012 8:09 PM PST reply actions

I think if we can sweep Zaga and have a great showing in the tourny we could get in

Even if we just lose in the finals, that should be enough. A win over Baylor would be the crown jewel to our resume, but alas it wasn’t for us.

by king.nothing on Jan 28, 2012 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

Technically, just NCAA tourney play.

NIT still counts as post season, despite the stigma.

by holly96 on Jan 28, 2012 8:11 PM PST up reply actions

Still better than nothing, and the extra games would help the team, I think.

My other college team got snubbed last year and ended up in the NIT. It stunk, but you still want to do well.

by holly96 on Jan 28, 2012 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

Well if WCC tourny started today

We be the #3 seed and play the winner of the San Diego/Portland game.

by king.nothing on Jan 28, 2012 8:12 PM PST reply actions

Also, students need to man up.

Don’t act like total idiots next time BYU loses at home, please.
