Upset in Provo! Cougars Best #15 Longhorns 40-21.

Taysom on his 68 yard TD - George Frey

The BYU Cougars trampled the #15 Texas Longhorns 40-21. After another 2 hour weather delay, the Cougars came out strong and rolled to victory behind a strong defense and a strong rush game.

After another two hour weather delay, a large crowed gathered to watch a previously stagnant offense put up 679 yards on the visiting Longhorns.  Taysom Hill led all rushers with 17 carries for 259 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He now stands in second place on the list of rushing yards in a single game.  The highlight rush for the night occurred with 2:17 left in the first quarter when Hill took the ball 68 yards while running past and away from the Texas defenders.

1st Quarter

BYU scored on their opening drive of the game  when they drove down the field but had to settle for a Justin Sorensen 34 yard field goal.  With 3 points up on the board, the crowd was excited but antsy to see how the defense would respond.  After a few defensive series, the Longhorns took the lead on a 57 yard pass from David Ash to Mike Davis.  After the made extra point, the Cougars would have their first chance to respond.  Hill did just that after a 68 yard rush only a minute and four seconds later.  The quarter ended with a Cougar lead 10-7.

2nd Quarter

Texas started the scoring in the second quarter with a 2 yard run by Joe Bergeron and took their second lead of the game at 14-10.  Less than 3 minutes later, Hill would again respond with a dazzling 20 yard rush to put the Cougars back up 17-14.   Two minutes and 48 seconds later, Paul Lasike found the end zone with a 10 yard rush, giving the cougars a 24-14 lead.  The Longhorns couldn't respond and gave the Cougars one last chance before half time.  BYU drove down the field but had to settle with a 32 yard Sorensen field goal to make the halftime score 27-14.

3rd Quarter

BYU again started off the scoring of the half with a 26 yard Hill run that gave the Cougars a 34-14 lead.  Texas responded a minute and a half later with their final score of the game when they scored on a 23 yard pass from Ash to Davis.  The Cougars would add two more field goals, 36 yards and 24 yards, to finish the scoring at 40-21.  Sorensen was 4 for 4 on field goals for the night.

4th Quarter

The fourth quarter was a defensive quarter as the Longhorns tried to catch up and the Cougars tried to run out the clock.  The quarter started out with a 4th and 1 for Texas.  The Defense responded and gave the offense the ball on a turnover on downs.  Twice more the defense would hold the Longhorns on fourth down before the end of the game.  The defense made sure there would be no comeback and that the Cougars would come out with a win.

In addition to the 259 rushing yards by Hill, he added 129 yards of passing with an interception.  Jamaal Williams added 30 rushes for 182 yards of rushing and Lasikie added another 87.  The Cougars amassed a total of 550 yards rushing.  The defense did not create a turnover but did sack the quarterbacks four times and held the offense to 300 yards less than in their opening week. The Cougars ran 100 plays in the game and led the time of possession 31:05 to 28:55.
