Weekly Picks: Week 3 of conference play

Ben Mclemore rebounds against Kansas State - Jamie Squire

With upsets and excitement reigning last week in college basketball, what does this week have in store for your favorite team?

Basketball season is now a couple of weeks into conference play and we have seen some very exciting and entertaining games. Last week we saw Iowa State upset Baylor before losing their first game of the season. We saw Michigan State knock Ohio State off the list of the unbeaten teams. We saw Memphis travel to Louisville and shock the Cardinals. We also saw our Cougars exact revenge on the two teams they lost to in the opening week of conference play. Since all eyes will be firmly on college basketball, what games are on tap for this week?

The National Games:

#15 Kansas vs #8 Iowa State

Monday night at 7 pm EST on ESPN, the Kansas Jayhawks will pay a visit to the Cyclones of Iowa State. It will be interesting to see how the Cyclones react after their first loss of the season. Being at home, the crowd could have a say in the outcome and should help propel their team to the win. Kansas will put up a fight, but the Cyclones should come out on top in this one.

Winner: Iowa State

#4 Michigan State vs Illinois

On Saturday at 8 pm EST on The Big Ten Network, the Spartans of Michigan State will hit the road to take on conference foe Illinois. The Spartans are coming off a big win against Ohio State last week and should come into this contest with only one loss. The Fighting Illini are playing at home, where they have played much better as all losses have been on the road. Even with the home crowd, Michigan State will be just too tough and Illinois won't be able to put away the Spartans.

Winner: Michigan State

#9 Oklahoma State vs #15 Kansas

In another game that involves the Jayhawks, Oklahoma State will travel to take on Kansas at 4 pm EST on CBS. Unlike the first game the Jayhawks will play in, this will take place at home and Kansas should have the advantage. The Cowboys have only played three road games on the year and none against a ranked opponent. The Kansas home crowd should be able to rattle the Cowboys enough to provide the players opportunities to put away the Cowboys.

Winner: Kansas

The WCC highlights:

BYU vs San Francisco

Thursday night at 9 pm EST on ESPNU, in a game that will help decide the pecking order of the WCC, the Cougars will travel to San Francisco and attempt to knock them out of second place. The Dons have struggled when playing the better teams but have also only lost to Gonzaga and Saint Mary's. Look for a full breakdown of this game later in the week.

Winner: BYU

Gonzaga vs Pepperdine

Later at 10 pm EST on ROOT sports, Gonzaga will look to stop any attempt by Pepperdine to advance in the WCC standings. Gonzaga will be on the road but is coming off a shocking loss to Portland and will be looking to take out their frustrations on the Waves. Pepperdine only won two on their four game road trip and will look to take advantage at home. Gonzaga should be too much and won't be rattled on the road.

Winner: Gonzaga

Other games of note during the week will be Portland vs Loyola Marymount, San Diego vs Santa Clara, Pacific vs Saint Mary's and BYU vs Santa Clara.
