BYU football recruiting: Devon Blackmon signs with the Cougars

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Riverside City College's Devon Blackmon will officially join the Cougars this upcoming season after signing his national letter of intent to play in Provo.

Devon Blackmon, the nation's No. 11 overall junior college wide receiver according to the 247sports composite rankings has signed his letter of intent to play football for BYU. Blackmon, who played for Summit High School in Fontana, California, and more recently Riverside City College in Riverside, California, chose BYU over Boise State, Fresno State, and Utah.

The 6-1, 185 pound Blackmon is recorded 29 receptions, 536 yards, and six touchdowns last season at Riverside City. He is rated by 247sports as a three-star recruit. Blackmon has superior speed, agility, and athleticism which make him a dangerous playmaker especially in space. Blackmon's ability to quickly change direction makes him a difficult cover for any defender with or without the football. That ability to change direction also makes him a good option for the Cougars in replacing JD Falslev as the punt returner.

Blackmon will have a familiar face on the BYU squad. Running back Jamaal Williams was a high school teammate of Blackmon. Williams' mother posted this photo of the two players high school days on her Twitter account last week.

The BYU depth chart at receiver is wide open with Cody Hoffman, Skyler Ridley, and JD Falslev all out of the picture due to graduation. Blackmon's ability to stretch the field should give him a spot in BYU's wide receiver rotation and an opportunity to make a big impact for the Cougars right away.

Here's some of Blackmon's highlights from his high school days:
