BYU football recruiting: Zac Dawe signs with the Cougars

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

After a verbally committing in February 2013, Zac Dawe made it official and signed his letter of intent to play football at BYU.

Zac Dawe, after being recruited by BYU, Utah, and Utah State officially signed with the Cougars by signing his letter of intent to play football for Coach Mendenhall. Dawe verbally committed last February after an unofficial visit to BYU. Dawe was a standout on the defensive line for Pleasant Grove High school in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He is listed as a three-star recruit by 247sports composite rankings and is listed at 6'4 and 265 pounds.

Dawe received quite a bit of attention from Utah and Utah State but BYU offered, and he committed, before the other schools extended an offer. At Pleasant Grove Dawe played Strong-Side Defensive End as well as won the 5A state heavyweight championship in wrestling. Pleasant Grove head coach Les Hamilton named Dawe his first ever junior captain due to his leadership ability, and the fact that the other players looked up to him. After graduating in 2014 Dawe plans on serving an LDS mission before playing for the Cougars.

Currently the Cougars have six players on the roster that could be fighting for a starting position on the defensive line in 2016 and so Dawe could come in and compete immediately, as long as he can keep himself in shape and minimize the effects of his "mission legs". With Pleasant Grove playing a 3-4 defense, Dawe excels in run-stopping and would fit in nicely with the Cougars brand of defense. He plans on coming back from his mission and contributing right away and hopes to play with his older brother, Parker, who walked on as an offensive lineman in 2013. Parker would be a senior in 2016.
