BYU football recruiting: Austin Chambers signs with the Cougars

Student Sports

Shawnee Mission West High School's Austin Chambers has sent in his national letter of intent and is officially a Cougar.

Austin Chambers, the nation's No. 92 overall offensive tackle according to the 247sports composite rankings, has signed his letter of intent to play football for BYU. Chambers, who played for Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park, Kansas committed to BYU back in June and has stayed solid ever since. He also had an offer from Kansas and interest from Arkansas, Kansas State, and Missouri.

The 6-5, 280 pound Chambers is rated a three-star prospect by 247sports. He is perhaps one of the more underrated prospects in this class. It's hard not to get excited when you see an offensive lineman driving a guy five to ten yards downfield (even if it is against high school competition) on film and Chambers ability to do so is a testament to his overall strength and physicality. Chambers' high school team ran the ball substantially more than they passed it, so he could use some refinement in his pass protection skills. He doesn't show any major weaknesses in that area though, so that refinement should come with more experience in pass protection.

Chambers is expected to leave on an LDS mission prior to enrolling at BYU, so he will not be in the mix a spot on the offensive line depth chart this upcoming season. BYU signed eight offensive lineman as part of its 2013 class, so with that many upperclassmen battling for spots on the offensive line it may have been a tough year for Chambers to work his way into the depth chart anyway.

Here are some of Chambers' high school highlights:
