BYU football recruiting: Teancum Fuga signs with the Cougars

BYU Football signing day. - Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Teancum Fuga, younger brother of former standout nose tackle Romney Fuga, officially signed with BYU on today. Teancum, known as Tico, will shore of the defensive front for the Cougars.

Teancum (better known as Tico) Fuga is following in his older brother Romney's path to BYU. The 6-1, 280 pound defensive tackle will play a key part of the defensive front for BYU. According to 247sports composite rankings Teancum is a three-star recruit. The Huntington Beach, CA native was quick to accept an offer from coach Mendenahll after going to BYU's camp last summer.

Bronco Mendenhall's defense depends on an aggressive nose tackle that takes up multiple linemen to let the linebackers run free to make plays. Romney was part of the 2012 defense that was one of the best in that nation and with Teancum's size and mobility it's feasible that he can follow in his brother's footsteps. Teancum is another BYU player that views Mendenhall as a father figure and can't wait to play for Bronco.

Cougar fans will have to wait a few years to see Fuga on the field for BYU. Teancum has definite plans to serve a LDS mission and will leave right after high school this year. It appears from his Twitter account that Fuga had knee surgery recently and is on the mend. He wasn't able to participate in all of the events that happened this last weekend for all of the recruits who were on campus. We hope that Teancum can heal quickly and get back to full strength.

From his highlight reel it's clear that Teancum can take on multiple defenders and wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. It is absolutely necessary for the nose tackle to be able to put pressure on the quarterback and take on multiple linemen. A significant weakness this past season was the lack of the defensive line play in getting through the opposing line. Losing Romney was certainly a big factor and hopefully the younger Fuga can make a similar impact when he arrives at BYU.
