BYU football recruiting: Chandon Herring signs with the Cougars

BYU Football signing day. - Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Perry High School's Chandon Herring just made his commitment to BYU official by signing his national letter of intent to play for the Cougars.

Today Chandon Herring made it official and signed his letter of intent to play football for BYU. The 6'7, 260 pound offensive tackle from Gilbert, Arizona plans to serve an LDS mission before stepping on the field in 2016. Herring is rated as the 176th offensive tackle in the nation and the 39th out of Arizona by 247 sports composite. With a two-star rating by the same site, he committed to the Cougars in June before other offers were received.

Herring has a good frame for an offensive lineman and has thus far been more consistent with the pass rush, which will help the line in the future if he can shore up some of the run blocking in order to open up holes. Currently there are 12 offensive lineman on the roster that could still be on the team when Herring comes back from his mission, so he could have a good chance to watch for a year and get himself back into playing shape after his mission. With a possible redshirt year as well, he could work himself into the lineup in 2017 and play for 3 or 4 straight years while shoring up a line that thus far has been questionable.

Take a look at Herring's highlights on hudl.
