Heartbreak in Provo: Matt Carlino to Transfer

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The inconsistent but exciting "Matty Basketball" has decided to transfer after an early graduation in June.

In what wasn’t a cruel April Fool’s joke, Matt Carlino, affectionately called ‘Matty Basketball’ has decided to transfer from BYU. Fans of the team loved to see Carlino’s passing, defensive savvy, and streaky 3-point shooting. Fans also remember the turnovers and the lengthy cold streaks from behind the 3-point line. I developed a type of love/hate relationship from watching him play. I defended him in front of my friends with lines like, "I know that right now he’s missed 5 three-pointers in a row, but he usually drains these" and "No dude, I’m definitely sure he tried to do that, it wasn’t just lucky." He’s like a recessive gambling addiction, you can lose round after round of Blackjack, but win one big hand and you can’t quit.

What does this mean for the 2014-2015 Basketball team? Well, it could mean a lot of things. I personally believe he was the most athletically gifted player on the team this past year (barely edging out a young Eric Mika). He reminds me of an erratic, left-handed Steve Nash. He has a perfect brain, body, and attitude for the run and gun offense that Coach Rose has relied on recently.

On a positive note, we only lose him for one season, on a negative note, it could have been a very good season. As an aside, do Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, and Duke fans feel like this after every season? We all know stars do not stay forever, but at least BYU fans know with reasonable certainty when players graduate or head to the mission field. This is just brutal…

I tend to believe this will hurt the Cougars more than most people would care to admit. Feelings get hurt, loyalties get tossed to the side. BYU fans might express things like "good riddance" or "He seemed cocky" or "the cold never bothered me anyway." Ok, maybe not that last one. I for one, wish him well. I hope he has a great Senior season somewhere else. I would hope that he doesn’t transfer to Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, or (heaven forbid) Utah.

As for replacing him, Wake Forest transfer Chase Fischer will need to step up in a big way. Frank Bartley showed promise at the end of last season as a shooter and defender. Kyle Collinsworth at least appeared quite comfortable starting at point guard in the second half of the season. All things considered, BYU should probably be ok moving forward.  For an in-depth look at possible replacements check out this article on Future Cougars.

He is flashy, he is fast, he is unpredictable, and he most certainly makes it rain (from time to time). He is Matty Basketball, and I will miss him.
