BYU overwhelms Georgia State, wins 80-62

In their second game of the season, BYU rode a scintillating offense to victory over Georgia State.

BYU defeated Georgia State in the second round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Tuesday night, running to an early lead that, despite Georgia State's efforts in the second half, was too much to overcome.

BYU denied Georgia State an opportunity to employ their pressure defense early in the game by defending, rebounding, and running the floor. By the midpoint of the first half, Georgia State had yet to score their second field goal, and BYU had opened a 31-2 lead. The torrid pace of the game slowed after that, but Georgia State would never fully recover.

BYU was led by Brandon Davies, who scored 28 points on 10-14 shooting as well as hitting 8-10 free throws and collecting 9 rebounds. Davies once again proved to be a versatile scoring threat, earning points in the low post, midrange, on the fast break, and at the free throw line.

Georgia State did make up ground in the second half, drawing as close as 11 points with 9 minutes left in the game, but a Carlino three followed by a Davies block reversed the momentum, and the Cougars extended their lead for good.

Tyler Haws continued his efficient scoring pace, hitting 8-for-12 from the field to finish with 22 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Injury update: Dave Rose had said that if Anson Winder was dressed for Tuesday night's game, it would be a positive sign regarding his ankle sprain, which has been a concern to Winder and BYU coaches. Although Winder did not play against Georgia State, he did dress.

BYU earned their second victory of the season and handed Georgia State their second loss. BYU's next matchup will be the Florida State Seminoles (1-1) Friday night at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
