Bobby Wolford FL LB decommits

Rivals.com is reporting the Florida linebacker decommited from BYU and is Boston College bound. For the year we still have six commits at LB and from watching a little film on them, namely Butch Pauu, looks like we could be loaded at linebacker for a few years to come. Depth obviously never hurts but I dont think this is going to kill us.  He is a devout catholic so I can't say this is a huge shocker. I remember being very surprised we got that commit in the first place. This sucks but life goes on and best of luck to him. Go Cougars!

Heaps bandwagon

I thought Heaps looked just as good agains Ole Miss as he did against Washington, Air Force, and FSU last year. In comparison to Nelson, I thought Nelson out performed him in those early games.  I thought Nelson was the better quarterback, his injury silenced that debate. Heaps finished up the season strong, but look at who we played. He had a great bowl game, but look at who we played. Against good defensive team, he has not been that great. Sure you can throw in his stats against Ole Miss in the second half as proof he is better than the game showed, and I hope that the first half was just the jitters, but I worry it isn't. I mean the guy started almost every game last season-the deer in the headlights look should be gone.

Against Washington Nelson was 11/17 for 131yds and 2td and 45yds rushing

Heaps was  13/23 for 131 yds and 0td and 6yds rushing

Against Air Force    Nelson was 8/19 for 73 yds  and had 95 yds rushing. he produced both scoring drives in the first quarter but had no production the rest of the game

Heaps was 2/6 for 19yds and INT. He was taken out of the game after the first quarter to many    fans dismay, but to this point he had been productive less.

Against FSU    Nelson was 1/4 for 1 yd an INT and 8 yds rushing. He was taken out of the game after halftime

Heaps was 15/31 for 114yds 1TD and -61 yds rushing. He had no production the second half.

At this point the two qb are equal if not a bit of an edge given to Nelson after the Washington game. Nelson goes out with an injury.

Heaps production in week 4 vs Nevada. He was 24/45 200s yds with no TD.

Against USU in week 5 he went for 270 yds but No TD and 2 INT

SDSU no TD and 1 INT.

Against TCU he throws for 91 yds No TD and 1 INT.

Heaps finally starts getting some TDs agains 3-9 WYO, 2-11 UNLV, 1-11 New Mexico, 3-9 CSU, and 10-2 Utah and finally 6-7 UTEP. Essentially against teams with winning records Heaps records 2TD passes against Utah and FSU. Other wise he has been essentially unproductive.

Essentially I am asking you all, why is the fan base so adamant about starting Heaps over another qb. The idea that we play Heaps because everyone thinks he is so great is deceptive. It the whole Emperors New Clothes idea. Other than a great recruit and a great arm, I just am not seeing the greatness in Heaps to the hype he has been built to. He seems way to out of his place on the field. I get the impression he lacks something that time, age, and experience offer; which makes me wonder if Nelson or Lark isn't a better option. I do remember how inaccurate Nelson was last year, but that was with a bumbed shoulder.  Both were very comparable, except Nelson seemed to be the one getting us into the end zone last year.

Now we take a look at Ole Miss. Hard to see how good they will be this year. But they were horrible last year and Heaps couldn't get anything done.  It seems like this is going to look a lot like last year. I expected a little more.

I would love for you guys to comment and steer me in the direction you believe I need to be headed. Bu I am just not on the Heaps bandwagon yet. I hope I am wrong, but if things go as they have in the past we won't see much offense until October when we start playing some poor football teams. The defense looks like it may be our saving grace this year.

Y'all come down to Oxford, MS

A lot of my friends at Ole Miss have been wondering how well BYU travels. We rebels want to let you know how welcomed you will be in Oxford if you decide to make the trip. The best tailgating in the country can be seen on our campus before football games in a 10 acre slice of heaven we call "The Grove." If you do decide to visit, get there early (the day before) so you can claim your tailgating spot. Be wary though, although drinking is allowed on campus, beer is not. To show a little bit of our hospitality, I know my friends and I will be making jello shots and chicken salad for all who want to visit our tent, cougar fans included. I sincerely hope you can make the trip, we'd love to see y'all here.

The Founding Fathers of BYU Independence

With BYU now Independent, who are the founding fathers?

Tom Holmoe definitely gets to be one. Bronco as well. President Samuelson is probably another.

What about LaVell? Is he too far removed from BYU football to count as the Benjamin Franklin of the group? Is he more like a William Bradford from the Mayflower or John Smith from Jamestown?

What about recent and current players? They didn't get much say in this (so it is not like they would be any of the guys who signed the declaration of independence), but they bear the brunt of making this work.

Who gets your vote?

BYU scores last in MWC in Academic Progress Rates

This FanPost has been promoted to the front page.

The APR rates are in and it's not pretty this time around for BYU.  BYU's score was 929, the lowest in the Mountain West, and just 5 points higher than the threshold where the team can lose scholarships due to poor academic progress.   That score puts them a whopping 17 points below Utah State and 27 points behind Utah, their in-state competition.

Support Ty Detmer

If you are going to be in Austin when BYU plays Texas, you can support Coach Detmer Friday night.

His team (St. Andrew's) will play Friday, September 9, 2011, at 7:00 PM.

Opponent: Eastside Memorial

Location: 5901 Southwest Pkwy, Austin, TX 78735

It is a home game. Detmer has a hot QB prospect who was recently offered a scholarship by THE U (not Utah, Miami).

Now we need to work with BYU to keep the fireside from conflicting.

Did I Go To The Same School?

I went to BYU just like most of the readers of this blog did. Chances are if you are reading this you love BYU as much as I do and you take it to heart when someone besmirches the name of the institution you care about so much. I know that Dead Spin isn't an actual news outlet, but they do a good job at making me laugh at some of the foibles associated with the world of sports. The hatchet job they allowed on their website about race, BYU sports, and the Honor Code was so unbalanced, poorly researched, and ignorant I had to write something about it. http://deadspin.com/#!5791461?comment=38346747:38346747

I didn't play intercollegiate sports at BYU, my athletics were limited to the intramural variety. My freshman year I lived in the same building as a few of the athletes, and as I moved away from BYU I have made friends with a few guys who played for BYU at one time or another. I am not so naive to think that people don't break the Honor Code. I was by no means perfect in that regard. The author's suggestion that race had anything to do with the dismissal of players from BYU is completely and totally wrong. The players who were dismissed or left the program  did it because they broke the rules. Rules that were posted throughout the school. I wasn't the only one who saw the big posters in the Wilk, signed the honor code, and received an ecclesiastical endorsement.

I was as bummed as anyone when Brandon Davies was suspended from the BYU Basketball team. He made a mistake and there were consequences. However they were personal and it was unfortunate that he had to have his private life made public, something he didn't sign up for. But he knew what the Honor Code was, and that comes first, even before extended March Madness runs.

I can say for certain that not every non married Mormon was having sex, that BYU is not Nazi like, I never encountered a secret army of honor code informants and that the reason anyone is dismissed from school is because of what they did, and not who they are.

What Thursday will tell

While doing the dishes I started to make a mental list of all the wonderful things Thursday could mean. Here is what I came up with.

1-All those K. Walker fans who said if KW was in the MWC he would be putting up 30 pts a night too. Well now you have got your chance. Jimmer put up 43, 25, and 30 against SDSU.

2-SDSU and BYU essentially play at the same time on Thursday. Which game will the nation watch? I think I know and thus proving why BYU's loss to the MWC is so detrimental. And also why I think we should be just fine as independents. Huge fan base.

3-While I think Jimmer Fredette is possibly bigger than Danny Ainge to BYU fans; winning this game will silence any doubters and eliminate even the need for comparison.

4-Win in New Orleans against Florida ought to cement NPOY for Jimmer

5-Win in New Orleans would be the biggest win in BYU history  and the makings of a cinderella run to Houston.

Feel free to add what else Thursday will mean. I am getting so pumped. I may have a  hard time sleeping tonight.
