Notre Dame AD: BYU independence "Smart"

BYU's going to be the target of a lot of hate over the next three months, but they've got a buddy in the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick says BYU is smart to move to independence and that the two schools will battle each other frequently on the football field.

The Slipper Still Fits: Zag Fans' Reaction to BYU Joining WCC

The West Coast Conference has been very receptive to BYU all along and now it appears a deal has been struck and the Cougars will be the ninth member of the conference. We are very, very excited about this move and will have much more on it later. We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below and welcome to our new BYU friends!

What will [BYU football] play for now? You won't be playing for conference championships, national championships, or even BCS berths. In my estimation your team now plays on for "televangelism" and nothing more. You will play a myriad schedule of complete jokes from the WAC for an easy "W" and just enough legitimate programs to get you to 3-4 losses each year thus remaining completely irrelevant on a national level. To quote the great TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson: 'If you are BYU, you have to be careful what you wish for.'"

BCS Evolution: BYU is out, so now what for the BCS AQ picture?

To be guaranteed an AQ for 2012 and 2013 the MWC must be in the top 6 in the average of the highest ranked team and the average computer ranking, and above 50% in the adjusted top 25 performance ranking. The MWC will not make this in the average computer ranking, and would not have with BYU. Fresno State and Nevada are practically inconsequential. They will be in the top 7 and are on pace for the top 5 in the highest ranked team criteria. This makes them eligible to petition for an exemption. Before BYU left the MWC's numbers were strongly supported by the strong showing in the adjusted top 25 performance criteria, which they were leading. They are still on pace for well above the 50% cutoff. Falling to #5, and in the thick of it for that much, makes the numbers look less cut and dry. If the MWC can maintain or improve these numbers for the next two years they should be a close call for an AQ in 2012 and 2013.

Basketball coach Dave Rose got thrown under the bus and is leaving a league that had four NCAA bids to a league that on a good year gets two bids. The only decent teams are Gonzaga and Saint Mary's and that is it. Now compare that to good teams as San Diego State, UNLV, and New Mexico. BYU fans who will get all pumped for this just remember your rival Utah is also going to San Francisco but is playing Cal and Stanford while BYU is playing the San Francisco University. How about Los Angeles, well Utah is playing UCLA and USC while BYU is playing Pepperdine and LMU. The picture is clear, and BYU hoops should be aware of being a great team in a so-so league. Just look back at Utah State a few years back who had 25-28 wins and was in the top 25 but was left out of the NCAA tournament."

SWXRN (WA/ID): BYU's Religious Roots Make Move to WCC Easier

Here's something you don't hear all the time. The West Coast Conference actually considered BYU's religious affiliation to be a positive instead not a turn-off. Brigham Young University, owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, said it would leave the Mountain West Conference and place the majority of its sports, minus football, in the WCC. The school's football team is going independent. Gonzaga Athletic Director Mike Roth said on a radio show in Spokane on Tuesday that "BYU, being faith-based, made it even easier." He said the school fits in well with the rest of the conference, all of which are private institutions. Of the eight existing members of the conference, seven are connected to the Catholic church. Pepperdine is affiliated with the Church of Christ. Roth also said fans shouldn't be waiting for the conference to add a tenth team, meaning schools like Denver or Seattle probably wouldn't be added to the fold anytime soon. "I believe when you try to make things better, sometimes you have to change some things to make them better," Roth told KGA radio. "We don't have any additional plans to expand, but we'll continue to monitor what's going on out there."

South Bend Tribune: BYU's Independence Could Affect Irish Scheduling

Jack Swarbrick did acknowledge that an independent BYU would provide a strong option for future November schedules, when many schools are restricted by conference affiliation. BYU would be college football's fourth independent, joining Notre Dame, Army and Navy. "Even prior to this announcement, we were talking to them about doing some games," Swarbrick said of BYU.

Honolulu Star-Advertiser: Hawaii to Announce Agreement to Play BYU

The University of Hawaii and the Western Athletic Conference are expected to announce a scheduling alliance with Brigham Young University in football today. UH is expected to become an almost annual opponent through 2020 on a home-and-home basis.

Speaking of the BCS, BYU knows it is not guaranteed to get the special status Notre Dame gets when it comes to those bowl berths. The BCS Board of Directors is set to meet next month to discuss what to do about BYU. This move does not seem to be one that will position the Cougars to make a consistent run as a football power. Non-AQ teams have a hard enough time as it is getting into the BCS. Wonder how hard it will be as an independent. Notre Dame can go out and schedule anybody it wants. It remains to be seen whether BYU can do the same, even with help."
