Sources tell us that Big 12 schools thinking about Pac10 must wait until after Wed. legislative hearing. Pac10 issues Friday deadline."
Hearing if A&M passes on Pac-10, Utah has edge on Kansas as potential 16th member."
"Harvey's first choice and what he is fighting diligently for and trying to express to the administration at BYU is that he wants to be back. This goes back to the decision he made to not declare for the [NFL] draft and to stay at BYU. ... So that is his hope. That is his intent, and that is what he would like to do."
Doman: Jake is far beyond his years. For an 18-year-old young man, he should be 18 right now, but he's not. He's acting like a 23-year-old veteran. That's very unique. That's his No. 1 strength right now — his maturity and confidence for how young he is. It allows him to succeed out there. He's also been trained well. Credit his coaches who have trained him through the years."
"BYU will edge Kansas State. OK, so this part of the limb might be a little further out than I wanted to tread, but the more I think about it, the more I think it's entirely possible the Cougars can top Kansas State in the second round in Oklahoma City. This BYU team is much better than their No. 7 seed. For starters the Cougars are a potent offensive team with a bonafide star in Jimmer Fredette and an experienced sidekick in Jonathan Tavernari.
To be sure, Kansas State will be something of a shock to the Cougars' system -- BYU hasn't played a team that defends quite as thoroughly as the Wildcats. Nor do most teams attempt to run with BYU's uptempo offense. The Wildcats, who average 71.1 possessions per game, will be more than happy to go up and down with BYU for 40 minutes. In an up-and-down game like that, either of these teams can get especially hot and pull away before the other has a chance to regroup. Why can't that team be the Cougars?"
"A little Steve Nash, a little Pete Maravich, but not enough of either to get past the first weekend: Jimmer Fredette, BYU."
"The Gators have won 70 games in three years and now they finally have a chance to go back to the NCAA tournament, and I don't think they're going to let this slip by. I think they're going to respond. I think Billy [Donovan] is a good tournament coach. I look for Florida to beat BYU despite the fact that they can shoot the basketball."
Yeah Dick, I guess shooting the ball isn't that important really. How many times have you seen BYU play this year again?
Chad Ford: "Another guy that no one's probably seen play this year, and actually a team that i think can be a sleeper in the tournament, I think they were under-seeded, is BYU's Jimmer Fredette.
Look at the numbers that this guys been putting up, in a much stronger Mountain West Conference. The kid comes from New York. He's got a killer crossover, can score, can really shoot the 3, has great floor vision, isn't an off-the-charts athlete, but a pretty good athlete and is a point guard with a lot of swagger. He's a guy, I think, if he blows up, and he's had some big big games in the Mountain West Conference, if he blows up in the tournament, they play Florida in the opening round and that could be a high profile matchup. In the 2nd round they will probably play Kansas State.
He could be a guy who easily ends up sneaking into the first round. I don't think he's there yet but there's no point guards in this draft other than John Wall that really get anybody excited. And he's a guy who I've been watching and could do it."
Bill Simmons: "I'm actually intrigued by that team because both of their guards can shoot the hell out of the 3, which I enjoy. I like that for my March Madness."
Chad Ford: "They do have problems with athleticism and, you know, Florida will give them a challenge. I actually think they'll be okay with Kansas State. I actually think they'd be okay with Pittsburgh. They're a team that I have going to the Great 8 and I think Syracuse will give them some problems because of the athleticism on that team. But I have them going to the Great 8, I think they should have four our fifth seed.
They were one more loss to New Mexico, that got a 3 seed in the tournament. How these guys got seeded is beyond me. I thought the seeding was absolutely terrible throughout the whole bracket."
Bill Simmons: "I couldn't agree more."
Don't sleep on BYU's Jimmer Fredette as a potential draft candidate this year. If he were playing at Duke, he'd be mentioned as a potential player of the year candidate. Much like Duke's own Jon Scheyer, he's not the greatest athlete in the world, but he's tough, can really see the floor and he shoots the lights out."
'He's really tough and he's a fearless kid,' one NBA GM said. 'He's going to lead a team. I wish he was a little bit better athlete, but I can't name five better point guards in this draft. He'll find a way to do it at the next level.'"
Having now been swept by New Mexico, I'd say this [a No. 4 seed] is as high as BYU is going to get."
