2012 combo guard Cory Calvert will play a year at BYU before leaving on his mission, the school announced this afternoon. The Colorado 5A Player of the Year adds options and depth at point guard and shooting guard for the Cougars. This also has scholarship implications for the rest of the roster.
Calvert, who led Chaparral High School to the 5A state championship, was originally expected to go on a mission without playing or using any eligibility.
As reported by Jay Drew on Twitter, the 6-3 guard will be on scholarship for the 2012-13 season, which would use up the last scholarship available. This would mean, unless I'm missing something, my warning from eight days ago that Craig Cusick may not get a scholarship for his final year was well-founded. His only opportunity would be if Chris Collinsworth is deemed medically unable to play.
Calvert scored 22.3 points per game as a high school senior, while pulling down 6.0 rebounds and dishing 5.1 assists per game as well. He shot 45% from the field, 38% from behind the arc, and 79% from the free throw line. Fellow 2012 commit Jordan Chatman is still expected to serve a mission before playing.
If I were to guess at an updated depth chart, assuming all players report healthy and ready to go, it would look like this:
