The 20th ranked Cougars shutout their fifth straight opponent. In front of more than 2,300 fans, Erica Owens held her six opponents scoreless in the last seven games. With the win the Cougars are now 12-4-1 (6-1-0) while San Diego drops to 10-8-0 (3-4-0).
The Game
In yet another physical game the Cougars dominated on both sides of the ball. The defense held the Toreros to one shot in the first half and four in the second. Owens was never really tested as she only had to save one shot on goal. On the other hand, the Cougars offense took 25 shots with 16 coming in the second half. The goalkeeper for San Diego only allowed one goal on 10 shots on goal. The one goal, the game winner, was scored in the 79th minute when Marissa Nimmer hit the back of the net after the assist by Ashley Hatch.
The win marks the second five game winning streak of the season for the Cougars. BYU has now won seven of their last eight games and will play their final two regular season games at home next week. If Portland can beat Santa Clara on Thursday, this could set up a three way tie for the top of the WCC.
Next Games
BYU will stay at home for games against Pacific on Thursday, November 7th and Saint Mary's on Saturday November 9th. The game against Pacific will be televised at 7pm MST on BYUtv.
