WCC hoops power rankings: Week 6

Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports

It wasn't the prettiest week of basketball in the West Coast Conference, but with two straight wins from Santa Clara at least every team in the conference is at .500 or better.

Gonzaga continues to dominate our poll grabbing seven of the eight first place votes this week. The 21st-ranked Zags improved to 10-1 on the season with a win over South Alabama (6-5) last Saturday. Gonzaga has now won six in a row since the Bulldogs' disappointing loss to a talented Dayton team in the Maui Invitational. Gonzaga will play Kansas State on a neutral floor Saturday to close out its non-conference schedule.

Saint Mary's faced its first real test of the season at Boise State (8-2) this past week and the Gaels passed handing the Broncos their first home loss of the season in an 82-74 victory. The Gaels were fueled by a 24-point night from senior guard Stephen Holt and a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) from Brad Waldow. Saint Mary's may get a few more opportunities to prove themselves as the head to Hawaii after a home game versus American (3-5) on December 19th to compete in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic where they will face South Carolina (2-4) and then depending on how they perform potential match-ups with a number of other teams including Boise State (for the second time), Oregon State (5-2), and 17th-ranked Iowa State (8-0).

BYU continues to lose ground in our rankings this week just barely holding on to the third spot with the same amount of votes as Pacific. The Cougars were embarrassed on the road versus Utah (9-1) in a 81-64 loss to the Utes last Saturday. BYU's guard line of Matt Carlino, Kyle Collinsworth, and Tyler Haws, who have been a big part of the Cougars' success this season, really struggled shooting the ball against the Utes. BYU will finish off its non-conference slate on Saturday with a trip to Oregon to play the Cougars' fourth ranked opponent this season in the 13th-ranked Ducks (10-0).
