The 6th ranked BYU Women's soccer team opened their regular season against the Cal State Fullerton Titans with a 3-1 victory. Cal State Fullerton was the 2012 regular season Big West champion and has been picked to repeat in 2013.
BYU started off aggressively but couldn't net their first goal until the 25:06 mark in the first half. Using the assist on a free kick from Paige Hunt, Rachel Manning angled a header into the right corner of the goal. This would be the only score of the half.
In the second half, BYU scored in less than 3 minutes at the 47:37 mark on an Ashley Hatch kick that slipped passed the Titans goalkeeper. This goal was assisted and set up by Cloee Colohan.
Cal State Fullerton, who didn't test the Cougar goalkeeper Erica Owen until the 25th minute, finally lit up the scoreboard with their first and only goal at the 73:19 mark.
BYU finished off the scoring at the 77:59 mark when Manning scored her second goal of the night off a penalty kick. Cal State Fullerton defender Morgan Batcheller received a yellow card when she took down Hatch in the box to set up the kick.
Before the Cougars beat the Titans, they also shut out the Haitian National team 5-0 in their lone exhibition game. With BYU putting another exciting team on the field, the fans can be optimistic. The success of the 2012 2nd ranked woman's team, who made it to the NCAA quarterfinals, set the stage for the 2013 team to continue a tradition of excellence and winning.
BYU next hosts Nebraska, from the Big Ten, on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 7:00 pm MDT. You can catch them on our field or on BYUtv. Following this game the Cougars take a trip to Louisiana State to play the 22nd ranked LSU Tigers.
