Ever since losing to St. Mary's earlier in the season, the Cougars had this rematch circled on the calendar. BYU who is ranked #3 in the nation took on the #1 ranked team and they wanted nothing more than sweet revenge, and that's exactly what the Cougars got. The Cougars played a solid game and never let their guard down as they defeated the Gaels 35-21.
First Half
The Cougars backs were the main reason why BYU was able to control the game in the first half. They forced turnovers deep by their goal line and keeping the Gaels from scoring often. When they were not busy stopping St. Mary's from scoring they were running it deep into Gaels territory scoring two tries and kicking two field goals in the first half. BYU controlled the half and played some dominate defense and closed out the half 20-10.
Second Half
St. Mary's would not go quietly and played a very strong second half. They closed the gap between them and the Cougars by kicking a field goal early to make it a one possession game. The Cougars then turned it over to the Gaels outside center who had nothing but green grass to the goal line. The Cougars caught a lucky break when the Gaels were called offside and negated the potential game tying score.
BYU then kept possession of the ball and drove down the field scoring again, making it 27-13. The Gaels would keep fighting in the game but were not able to out power the strong backs of the Cougars who kept playing tough and smart defense while controlling the game. The forwards also played smart ball by controlling the scrums and protecting the ball with some strong rucks.
The Cougars came out victorious and were able to get the huge win over St. Mary's with the 35-21 final score. The fans at south field were as great as ever by filling up the seats, and keeping it loud for the Cougars. As always the players showed their class by applauding their fans and said their thanks after the game.
Next Game
