In 1988 the Cougars were humiliated by the Utes by losing 57-28 and ending a 9-year win streak. 1989 could not come fast enough for Ty Detmer and the rest of the team. BYU jumped out to a 49-0 lead (still a LaVell Edwards Stadium record for points scored in a half), keeping the Utes out of the end zone until just before the half, and scoring touchdowns on their first eight possessions. Utah's three fourth quarter touchdowns did little to assuage their defense of the 750 yard and 70 point barrage put up by the Cougar offense.
