Tailback #29 Peter Van Valkenburg, or as he came to be known by Cougar Fans "Fleet Pete," was the first Cougar to gain over two thousand yards rushing. Van Valkenburg became an All-American after the 1972 season and received the honor of playing in three different post-season games including the Senior Bowl, the Blue-Gray Game, and the All-American Game. As a senior he had his best season, and rushed for 1,386 yards, setting the BYU single season rushing record. That record stood 29 years until Luke Staley out gained him by 183 yards in 2001, and is still the second best single season record at BYU. Van Valkenburg rushed for 2,529 yards and is still ranked seventh all-time rushing leader at BYU.
