The BYU Cougars now know who they will play in the 2014 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational this November.
The Cougars will face former Mountain West Conference foe San Diego State in the first round of the tournament. The Cougars and Aztecs have met 71 times since their first game in 1941, with BYU winning 48 of them. The last time the teams played the Aztecs won 72-54 in the 2011 MWC Championship Game.
"Steve Fisher has a strong recruiting class, Arizona transfer Angelo Chol, and senior Dwayne Polee II. The Aztecs are still dangerous. BYU's Tyler Haws was one of America's top scorers last season, but the Cougars lost standout Eric Mika to an LDS mission, " ESPN.com writer Myron Medcalf wrote of the matchup.
The game will be on November 24, at 9:30 MT (ESPN 2).
According to Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune, the winner of the BYU-SDSU game will play in the second round against the winner of the Pittsburgh-Chaminade matchup.
This will be BYU's third appearance at the Maui Invitational. The Cougars played in the tournament back in 1992 and 2004. In their first appearance, BYU lost to Duke in the tournament's championship game.
The tournament is in its 30th year and will be played at Lahaina Civic Center in Maui November 24-26.
"The 2014 field promises to be a great one. With accomplished programs in Arizona, Missouri, Purdue and Pittsburgh and emerging teams including BYU and San Diego State, the 2014 tournament will feature fierce competition," Dave Odom, Tournament Chairman, said back in 2012. "This is one of the deepest and most balanced fields we've ever had."
