BYU Rugby wins 4th straight National Championship, 30-27 over Cal

The Cougars defeated Cal, 30-27 in the 2015 Varsity Cup.

Two titans of college rugby, BYU and Cal, collided at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday to award the Varsity Cup and the National Championship.

In a hard fought game the Cougars prevailed 30-27 over a talented Bears team.

The fist half of the game was in favor of the Cougars as they were able to jump out to a 17-3 lead at halftime. Cal fought back hard in the 2nd half outscoring the Cougars 24-13, but the Cougars hung on and were crowned champions.

Cougar star Johnny Linehan had a terrific outing, in fact he had a perfect outing. Linehan connected on all six of his conversion opportunities including a 40 meter bomb which proved to be the difference in the match.

The most razzle dazzle moment for the BYU Rugby team came when Linehan kick-passed past the try line to find Jared Whippy for a try to extend the Cougars lead.

This marks the 5th national title for the Cougars in rugby overall, but the 4th straight. An accomplishment achieved by only one other program, the Cal Golden Bears.

Senior flanker from American Fork, Utah, Kyle Sumsion was named the games most valuable player.
