Cougs on Cougs: Couch Coaching from the Staples Center & BYU Gift Guide Contest

Jess and Mary met up with Jake Welch in LA to review BYU’s loss against USC. Later in the show, find out how you can win a signed BYU basketball.

It is week 47 of Cougs on Cougs—shout out to our favorite past no. 47 on the BYU Football team, Ziggy Ansah. While the football team is on a game break as they get ready for the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21 in San Diego, the basketball team played in two NBA arenas this past week. The Cougs beat in-state foe Utah State 77-63 at the Vivint Smart Home Arena (home of the Utah Jazz) before traveling to Los Angeles to take on the University of Southern California Trojans at the Staples Center (home of the LA Lakers/LA Clippers) in the Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2016 Hoophall.

The bad news — the Cougars shot poorly from three and gave up a lot of points in the 91-84 loss to undefeated USC. The slightly better news — Mary and Jess were in Los Angeles to witness the game in person and to Coach from the Couch immediately following the game with Vanquish the Foe’s very own, Jake Welch. Of course, there was plenty that went wrong in that game resulting in the loss, but we give you our thoughts on what we saw that was encouraging and why we’re still optimistic about this BYU Basketball team. As a bonus, Jake has a suggestion of something unconventional the team can do to bond and improve their performance:

With Christmas just around the corner, we wanted to gift our lovely followers with a chance to win a BYU Basketball signed by Nick Emery, TJ Haws, Elijah Bryant and others! In a Cougs and Culture segment, we present our 2016 gift guide for BYU athletes, coaches and administrators. Watch for our ideas on what we would gift BYU Football’s Tanner Mangum and Jamaal Williams, or BYU Basketball’s Nick Emery and Payton Dastrup. Then, tweet us your own gift suggestions for a chance to win! Here are the rules for entry:

  1. Follow Cougs on Cougs on Twitter.
  2. Like our Facebook page.
  3. Subscribe to our YouTube channel.
  4. Tag us in a tweet with a gift idea for a BYU Football and/or Basketball player, coach, and/or administrator (like Tom Holmoe).
  5. Enter by Mon. Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. MST. We’ll announce the winner on next week’s show!

As always, we round up the news from the BYU social mediasphere in our Talk of the Town segment, including a thirteenth game added to the 2017 BYU Football schedule, brand new black uniforms for BYU Hoops, and a new nickname for triple-double king Kyle Collinsworth.
