BYU football media day: New times and TV schedules released for 2016 season

Thursday morning was the kickoff for BYU media day and scheduling was the first bit of breaking news. The time and TV carrier for four games that we did not know previously were made known to the public.

All times are Mountain West Standard time. When UCLA comes to town, following last years nail biter, the kickoff will be at 8:15pm and the game will be on either ESPN or ESPN2. Toledo, who beat some big name programs like Arkansas last year will kickoff in Provo at 8:15pm and the game will be on ESPN2. Mississippi State coming, from the heralded SEC, will also kickoff at 8:15pm at Lavell Edwards Stadium on ESPN. Finally, SUU kicks off at 1pm in Provo and will be on BYUtv.

Utah radio host, Kyle Gunther made some good points on Twitter regarding the late schedule times:

There are millions of BYU fans nationwide, many of whom live in the Central or East Coast time zones. These games are pretty late for them with kickoffs after 9 or even 10pm. It’s clear that Holmoe and Sitake value exposure here and that is likely the right move.

Especially from a recruiting perspective, kids want to play on ESPN or other big time networks. These late times give BYU the opportunity to do that.
