Apart from Big 12 expansion, the biggest question of the offseason was who would end up at BYU’s starting QB. Today, that question has been answered, as Ty Detmer announced after practice that Taysom Hill has won the job and will start day one against Arizona.
The question now becomes whether or not Tanner will see playing time regardless of Taysom’s performance. For now, at least we know who is first string.

Both quarterbacks are fan favorites and even though the competition hasn’t seemed to cause controversy among the team, or even the quarterbacks, fans have certainly been emotional about who they want to start.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake added that Mangum will not redshirt this season, and will see time as a backup QB.

Having two, high level QB options is always a big plus, especially given Taysom Hill’s injury history. If Hill is healthy, he’s one of the most exciting and dynamic quarterbacks in all of college football, and it’s not hard to see why the coaches decided to go with him to start the season.
