Cougs on Cougs: Bad luck? What the numbers say about BYU football’s 1-3 record

Jess and Mary have stats man Ken O’Kelley on to talk missed tackles, incompletions, interceptions, dropped passes and more ahead of Week 5.

Week 37 of Cougs on Cougs is a little late this week, due to Mary making the long trek back to Provo from Washington D.C. where she witnessed the Cougars take on the Mountaineers at FedEx Field. Although BYU had its chances, the Cougs fell to West Virginia 32-35, dropping to 1-3 in September. It was another hope-inducing but ultimately frustrating loss. But take heart, Cougar fans. There is a silver lining to the clouds, and we believe the sun is about to burst forth in all its winning glory!

In a special edition of Coaching from the Couch, Mary and her longtime family friend and D.C.-based BYU grad David Premont give their takes on the loss from the sidelines at FedEx Field immediately following the game (before quickly being ushered away—those event staff workers have no chill). Jess also gets her two cents in with what she thought went well, and what she thinks needs to change. How about just a change in luck? It probably won’t come as a surprise to you that BYU ranks 121st out of 128 teams when it comes to luck. (Side note: Utah ranks 4th and West Virginia ranks 6th.)

For the first time during football season, we talk with Ken O’Kelley, the resident statistician for Cougs on Cougs. We asked Ken to compile some stats for us on missed tackles and incomplete/dropped passes, and a breakdown of Taysom’s six interceptions. Against which opponent did the BYU defense have the highest percentage of made tackles? How many of Taysom’s incomplete passes were dropped passes, bad throws, or just great defense? Which receiver has dropped the most passes? Ken gives us the numbers and we discuss how the numbers could improve and why they might not tell the whole story. Make sure you follow Ken on Twitter, @okelleykm, for more of his thought-provoking stats!

Up next, the Cougars take on the Toledo Rockets at home this Friday night at Lavell Edwards Stadium for a chance to get back on the winning track. We give you a short preview of quarterback Logan Woodside and his crew. Did you know Woodside has a total raw quarterback rating of 92? He also hasn’t been sacked yet this season—let’s hope our linebackers change that.

As always, we round up this week’s news from the BYU social mediasphere in our Talk of the Town segment, including the last of the Lone Peak 3 weddings, Jimmer Fredette putting on a show in Singapore, and King Collinsworth and his blue steel look at the Dallas Maverick’s media day.
