Cougs on Cougs: Celebrating same-weekend BYU Football and Basketball wins

Jess and Mary relish the opportunity to do Coaching from the Couch after wins from both the BYU Football and Basketball teams.

Hello Cougar Fans! Last week we were hoping to be discussing BYU Football and BYU Basketball wins on this Cougs on Cougs episode, and our wish came true! BYU Football took down UNLV at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas with a final score of 31-21, and BYU Basketball won its season opener against Mississippi Valley State in the Marriott Center, 91-61. It feels great, doesn’t it? More good news? It could happen again this week!

We dive into a double batch of Coaching from the Couch to break down each formerly mentioned game. With two great wins, there wasn’t a lot we wanted to complain about. In its season opener, the basketball team looked poised and in control, moving the ball well and playing good defense.

At UNLV, freshman QB Joe Critchlow made his first career start and impressed us, but Squally Canada stole the show with his career-high 213 rushing yards. Alongside the major positives we found in both games, we did pinpoint a couple of issues we’ll be looking to improve when the football team takes on UMass on Saturday and the basketball team faces Princeton and UT Arlington this week.

In Talk of the Town, we have bad news and good news for BYU Football, and discuss the #gingertakeover that has been infiltrating BYU Sports! We also share our favorite meme from the BYU-UNLV game, give the only take there should be on the Nick Emery news, and show you where to find a Christmas gift for the Cougar fan in your life!

It’s still one of the best times of the year, when BYU Basketball plays two games and BYU Football plays one game, all in the same week. The hoopsters take on Princeton in New Jersey on Wednesday night at 5 p.m. MST before traveling back to Provo Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off, and a chance to [hopefully] exact revenge against UT Arlington for a first-round NIT loss in the Marriott Center last March. Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. is the final home game of the 2017 football season, and it’s Senior Day! We hope you’ll be there to support the football and basketball teams this week, in person or in spirit! Go Cougs!
