Cougs on Cougs: #BYUValentines and a look back at BYU Basketball’s California road trip

Jess and Mary bring back one of their favorite things — #BYUValentines, and invite you to participate by turning it into a contest. Check out Couch Coaching, Talk of the Town and more in episode 56.

NCAA Basketball: San Francisco at Brigham Young Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Happy Valentine’s Day! The 56th episode of Cougars on Cougars falls on the day of love, and how appropriate, because we love BYU sports and we love our viewers. We kick things off with #BYUValentines. They’re a tradition we started last year, praising some of our favorite BYU athletes with awful (but amazing) puns. “Will you be my Valentine? Say Jaas,” just to spark your memory on those.

This year we came up with a whole bunch of new ones, and we’ve turned the whole thing into a contest. Send us your best #BYUValentines (check out the episode and/or hashtag for plenty more examples) by Friday, Feb. 17 and you might win a beautiful signed photo of Tanner Mangum.

Next it’s time for Coaching from the Couch and we’ve got an expert on set. Former ROC president and current BYU student Josh Brown took the trip out to California last week to see BYU play Pepperdine and then San Fransisco. He and his pals also checked out the set of ESPN’s College Gameday which was in Moraga for the Saint Mary’s/Gonzaga matchup. Yeah, we’re just a little bit jealous.

Anyhow, Pepperdine was a 99-83 loss for the Cougs but San Fransisco was a 68-52 win. We dive into this team’s Jekyll and Hyde tendencies with Josh and evaluate what went wrong in BYU’s road split and what went well. Topics include but are not limited to high school-sized gyms and flat starts, three-point shooting and defense. You’ll notice a few of these things are recurring themes. Here’s hoping for a sweep of San Diego and no. 22 Saint Mary’s at home this weekend — both were losses on the road.

Finally, we’ve got you covered with Talk of the Town. What’s been happening around the BYU social mediasphere? One of our favorite bromances is back with BYU Football’s Tanner Mangum gifting Matt Hadley a pretty impressive portrait. We had to have a whole Yoeli Childs section after the freshman’s career performance against San Fransisco (more bad puns included). BYU Basketball’s senior night may err on the depressing side plus much more.

Happy Valentine’s Day, and don’t forget to submit your #BYUValentines to us by Friday!
