One month after reporting the news, it looks like BYU’s matchups have been set for the 2017 Barclay’s Center Classic.
According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports and FanRag Sports, BYU will play Alabama and Umass in the 4-team invitational. Minnesota will also be participating in the event. The event, which is held in the Brooklyn Nets arena, will be the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving (November 24-25). BYU will play Alabama Friday and UMass Saturday, regardless of the results.
Alabama looks to be the better “resume builder” for BYU, as they return many key contributors and a top recruiting class for looks to be a potential preseason top 25 team. They are coached by former NBA head coach and player Avery Johnson.
UMass is coming off a disappointing 14-18 season that saw the firing of its head coach. The Minutemen recently hired Matt McCall from Chattanooga to lead the program.
BYU and UMass recently played a home-and-home (of sorts). The ranked Minutemen claimed a 105-96 win in a 2013 game in Springfield, Mass., then BYU claimed the 2014 matchup in Provo, winning 77-71 in overtime.
BYU last played in the Barclay’s Center in 2012 for the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. BYU lost both games in the tournament to Florida State and Notre Dame.
