For those of you keeping track at home, it has been 242 days since BYU Football last met an opponent on the gridiron. But finally, after the long, long offseason, BYU Football officially kicks off the season at LaVell Edwards Stadium Saturday against FCS opponent Portland State!
Although this will be the first-ever meeting between the Cougars and the Vikings, there are some connections between the two programs. In our ‘Know the Foe’ segment, we introduce you to Portland State and give you a few players to watch out for on the field Saturday. Just two years ago, Portland State defeated the OTHER Cougars (of the PAC-12, Mike Leach’s Washington State), so expect the Vikings to be ready for this opportunity! BYU vs. Portland State will be at 1 p.m. MDT on ESPN. Wear navy if you’re headed to the game.

In preparation for the first game, BYU released its initial depth chart for the season. We point out a couple position changes and some things that surprised us. We discuss all the variations of running back listed (there are a lot), who we think will really start, discuss the loss of Francis Bernard, do a double take at an offensive lineman switching to tight end, and more. Overall, reviewing the depth chart is exciting and makes us feel like this year’s team has a shot to be pretty good. What names or position groups stand out to you?

In Talk of the Town this week, ESPN and Marvel worked together to create some awesome throwback comic book covers to add hype to the first week of college football (BYU/PSU is week zero). Check out the BYU vs. LSU cover! Cosmo looking fierce, right!? We like our odds as Captain America in this scenario.

And of course, we had to discuss the #BYUPackers again this week, particularly with Taysom Hill’s 23-yard game winning touchdown run all over social media. Just like the good old days! Jamaal Williams got the start at running back for the Packers, as did Harvey Langi, for the New England Patriots. He ended up as their leading tackler. We love to see what these former BYU standouts are doing in the NFL, and we’ll continue to update you with notable performances each week!

We wish you all an exciting and euphoric start of the BYU Football season! Coaching from the Couch and Along the Trail to Fame and Glory (giving all of you traveling to Houston an inside look at the city) return next week! Go Cougs!
