Cougs on Cougs: Silver linings in BYU Football’s loss to Utah?

Jess and Mary recap the Holy War and pull out the positive performances from the disappointing loss.

Despite the hope (and desperation) in the air last Saturday, the BYU Cougars lost their seventh straight football game to the University of Utah. It hurts. It does. But as C.S. Lewis said, “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

Although there was a lot that went wrong in the game, in Coaching from the Couch we focus on a few things that went right and that could have a hugely positive impact on the rest of the season. Sure, it sucks to lose to your rival (again), but there’s no use dwelling on it with the no. 10 Wisconsin Badgers visiting LaVell Edwards Stadium Saturday. A brutal September schedule means the Cougars have another opportunity to get a meaningful win! Here’s to hoping all the pieces come together against the Badgers. And that Tanner’s ankle is okay. And that Beau Hoge is incredibly prepared, if not.

Talk of the Town starts with our former favorite BYU Basketball player, Jimmer Fredette, and how the Utah rivalry played into him asking his now father-in-law for permission his daughter’s hand. Speaking of BYU Basketball, the team was spotted supporting their BYU Football counterparts at LES on Saturday. Check out Ryan Andrus’s mustache! College basketball practices officially start Sept. 29, so we are only a few weeks away from that glorious time when football and basketball overlap!

The NFL regular season kicked off last week, and four Cougars from last year’s team made a professional 53-man roster. What do they all have in common? They were all captains at BYU. Leadership matters! We also update you on how other Cougars around the NFL are doing, including Danny Sorensen (and Andy Reid) and the Chiefs beating the Patriots in Gillette Stadium, Kyle Van Noy signing a two-year extension with New England, Jamaal Williams’ performance in his first NFL game, and more.

We hope to see many of you at LES on Saturday! It’s not every year BYU gets a top 10 team to Provo. And don’t forget, during halftime the no. 6 jersey representing Robbie Bosco, Luke Staley, and Marc Wilson will be retired! Be there to honor those guys and to (likely) support Beau Hoge in his first career start. Wear white. (Game’s on ABC at 1:30 p.m. MDT for those who can’t make it.) Go Cougs!
