BYU will look to defy the odds in Vegas

With the WCC tournament starting this week (women’s Thursday, men’s Friday) and the brackets finalized, odds have been showing up for BYU’s chances to advance in the tournament.

The most reputable site out there that does each conference’s odds is KenPom, which posted the WCC’s tournament odds Sunday morning:

BYU will be in a battle to win its first round game over San Diego, as KenPom gives BYU a 64.4% chance to beat the Toreros, with a predicted final score of 67-63. The teams split the season season series 1-1, with BYU winning the matchup in Provo (74-58), and San Diego winning the latest matchup (75-62).

According to multiple reports, however, USD head coach Lamont Smith was arrested Sunday for charges of domestic violence.

If BYU wins that, the Cougars have a 21.6% chance to advance, presumably over St Mary’s, and get to the finals.

In the finals, BYU has a whopping 5.6% chance to take home the crown and get an automatic NCAA tournament berth. BYU had a 1% chance to knock off 29-0 Gonzaga in 2017, so that’s almost a 6x greater chance for BYU to win the WCC tournament! Easy, right?

Anything outside of a Gonzaga-St Mary’s final would be a surprise, but maybe BYU will get hot for three games and shock everyone, Cougar fans included.

Here’s to hoping BYU gets a jumpstart on the March Madness and wins its first conference tournament championship since 2001.
