BYU made the final addition to its coaching staff Tuesday afternoon, by hiring Rice University Running Backs Coach AJ Steward as the 10th assistant.
The 28-year-old Steward served as the Running Backs coach at Rice from 2014-2017. In 2017, Rice’s running attack was 38th in the country, averaging 187 ypg.
Before Rice, Steward was a Tight End for the Kansas Jayhawks from 2007-2011 (back when Kansas was good!), where he mostly played on the Scout team.
Steward will bring a young, energetic personality to BYU’s coaching staff, and be relied on to recruit. With his time spent coaching in Houston, he will be expected to make connections and bring in guys from Texas’ rich recruiting grounds. Although Steward is young, he does have multiple years coaching at the FBS level under his belt.
With the hire, BYU’s offensive staff looks as follows:
Offensive Coordinator- Jeff Grimes
QB/Passing game coordinator: Aaron Roderick
RB: AJ Steward
WR: Fesi Sitake
TE: Steve Clark
OL: Ryan Pugh
With National Signing Day tomorrow, we could see Steward make an appearance in front of the media.
